We sit around disconnecting through texting and facebook, feeling ultimately entitled to everything, and yet we've done nothing to stop the war in Iraq, our identity is constantly dictated to us by Urban Outfitters nostalgia, and Starbucks are everywhere. The bums lost and the hipsters don't even care. It's a sad state of affairs.

Hey, I like Urban Outfitters too. I bought my LP picture frames there and I check their discount racks all the time. However, it is a totaly hipster haven, and one that ultimately streamlines our individuality. They sell pre-worn out '80s vintage tshirts for $35. It's crazy.

yeh it's easier to envision culture as passive and malleable then active and transformative. That sort of article is very exaggerative and might make a good 1st year paper if you strung some easy quotes in there but definitely not too thought provoking. True about the cycle of subgroup fads though, it's just a cycle influenced by many factors that aren't exclusive.

+bonus though is that the article is great talking points for picking-up cmns girls.

there's people who associate with a subculture because they like thing X that the subculture originally was based on (usually music) and then there are people who like being apart of something and like thing X is a secondary function. you can always tell who's who after the smoke clears and it's not en vogue anymore.
