Well I'm about supporting athletics from my country and I hope that they win some medals, they've worked hard to get where they are.

I want to check out the opening ceremonies.. maybe I should see if it's on torrent.

i get what you're saying. i just don't agree with your summery of my opinion. and i don't agree with your merger of the people and the event. i'm marginalizing the event (but that's still not accurate). i don't really care about athletes and their achievements, so i guess i'm marginalizing them by way of aesthetics (is that really worth calling me on? srsly) but i think "not important to me" is very different from "categorically not important". i recognize how hard they work and how much they get shit on and for so little. that's the part i respect the most. but it doesn't matter in my life. much like my efforts to be the king of FNK don't matter to the olympic athletes. granted i don't put in nearly the same effort...

i dunno man, how many mu'fuckahs do you know would dedicate their life to shot put even if they lived below the poverty line and had no other real skill.

alot of the draw for athletes from other countries to perform so well is that their alternatives to sport are rather bleak, and in the states which that is the exception you can make tremendous money from sponsership deals for even for the most obscure sports.

why would you train all day for less then 24k a year when you can go bang nails for 48k

Uh, you realize Canada generally doesn't finish in even the top 20 in Summer Olympics historically? I mean even the Ukraine has a way better track record in the Summer Games than we do. rofl.

The Winter Games on the other hand, we always finish top 5 in both Gold and total medal count. We are always a contender, some games beating USA, Russia, etc.(Usually Germany is the top dog in the winter...)

Canada: 5th in Gold, 3rd in total medals behind Germany, USA

2004 Summer Games in Athens
Canada finishes 21st in Gold, 19th in total. Several Eastern European countries beat us

2002 Winter Games In Salt Lake City
Canada Finishes 4th in Gold, 4th in total Medal count. Not too bad for a country of 30million... We beat Russia...

2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney
Danada finishes 24th in Gold, 18th in total. 5 Eastern European countries beat us, and also Ethiopia and Cuba beat us

1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano
Canada finishes 4th in Gold, 5th in Total

1996 Summer Games in Atlanta
Canada finishes 21st in Gold, and a HUGE 11th in total medal count

1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer
Canada 7th in Gold, tied for 5th with the USA in total

That's for the last 14 years. IF you go back farther the trend breaks a bit, Canada finishes a little higher in the Summer games(you have to remember that several Eastern European countries beat us every year that were part of the USSR...) and for somer eason a little lower in the Winter games.

Other games are anomolies like 1984 when Canada finished 6th in Gold and 4th in total in the Sumemr Games, but the USSR/eastern block boycotted... or in 1980 we didn't appear because they were in Moscow and half the world boycotted them.

There is no reason why canada shouldn't be a contender in the summer olympics, it all comes down to a lack of funding and an under apreciation of our athletes. If you think it's for any other reason you are a fool, but we already knew that.

Quit back tracking. you said we'd be made fools of in the Winter Games like we are in the Summer Games now, I pointed out we never do well in the Summer and always finish top 5 in the Winter.


And a contender in the Summer? We have 30million people in our country, with a Winter Climate. If we funded it more, we might be able to make a push for top 10, but a contender... That'd be damn near impossible.
