Yes, Canada spends less on it's Athletes. Very true. Don't blame the Government, blame our culture. Canada defines itself as a 'Cultural Mosaic'

Basically even 2nd, sometimes 3rd Generation Canadians think of themselves as where their heritage is from, rather than Canadian. Most Canadians don't really care about Canada's success(not saying that I don't...). Because of this, our mediocre performance at the Summer Olympics is NOT an issue, so Politicians spend money on issues Canadians are vocal about.

Why does America, Germany, Russia, China(even other smaller E. European countries like Ukraine, Romania etc) perform better than Canada? They have pride in their Nation, in their people. They have superiority complexes. rather than embracing other cultures, they reject them and outsiders conform or leave(for the most part). Their national success and identity become a big deal, and spending is reflected

It's a pretty fickle argument. I find it hard to believe almost every country in the world, except Canada, falls into this national pride category of yours. Generalizing the entire world's opinions seems a little outlandish.

Strictly speaking, Canada doesn't support their athletes to the degree other countries does.

Every other country in the world is an overstatement, I listed 6 as an example.

We do better in the Winter because 1. Climate 2. we hold them higher 3. other countries hold them lower

PS: Guys, still doesn't change the fact that we always suck at the Summer Olympics.

If we didn't care about sports and that's why we suck at summer games, why do we always do so well in the Winter ones? This isn't that difficult to figure out: We focus on winter sports.

Why does Russia place so well in the summer? Because they focus on Summer sports as well. We just don't. When's the last time that anybody in Canada really paid attention to our placement in major worldwide sports other than Winter ones? Well, maybe Lacrosse and Soccer, but I can't think of any others... but does anyone here pay attention to global track when it's not the Olympics? Or gymnastics? Or water polo? We sure as hell do for Figure Skating, or Hockey (even the Juniors!), or Skiing, or Snowboarding, etc. etc. etc.

Fuck, one time I watched the World Luge Championships on TSN. True story!

i think there are positives to China hosting the Olympics, like the IOC pressuring the govt for press freedom... could be a catalyst for some lasting changes or at least give the public a chance to get more informed about their country's politics...
