my suggestion would be to leave the "biographies" alone and pick up the che reader, which contain far more if his writings.

or

just check out http://www.marx.org and scroll down on the authors column for che. :)

i like the big ass biography because it gives me more than just stuff about che, but also info about fidel castro, the whole revolution, CIA activities, family background, etc... i plan on checking out some of his writings as well, but the biography is very informative and interesting if you want to learn about the life of che and the revolution...i'm sure the che reader is very interesting (and i plan on finding it) but a different kind of info than a biography would give you. the biography also uses much of guevera's own diary to detail the information.

i'm still reading the che biography (about halfway done)

now reading also:

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey

i've been indulging my inner "lady" lately - dove right into both bridget jones', reading 4 blondes at the moment, then will carry on to pride and prejeduce. hopefully by then i will have purged this need...

(but i do kinda really like it.)

no doubt, just remember for the most part, you will get the most accurate account of the man, from his own words/speeches/manifestos and such. Another good source, if you dont want to go out and grab the book is http://www.marx.org where they have writings and speaches of both Che Guevera and Fidel Castro.

i will be checking out some of his own writings for sure. lots of the biography is taken from his personal diaries, speeches and letters, so i mean, i'm getting a sense of who he is through his own words in this biography as well. the biography gives me a personal and historical background that his speeches couldn't give me...diving into family history, childhood experiences, personal romances, etc... i'm not only interested in his political and social ideas, but also what made him who is was. it's also cool because the biographer interviewed many of his friends and colleagues for the book and includes their views.

I found the first day I read it I was going at a slower pace than usual, but after about 100 pages my mind was adjusted to frey's raw unpolished writing and i started to speed through... Great books, kept me completely enthralled all the way through.

i was going to start reading it until someone told me that they found it to be rather boring. the author was on oprah yesterday, and all the middle american housewives on the show seems really shocked by everything he's been through. i don't think it's going to shock me that much. i think i'm just one of those ppl who's too wrapped up in their own shit to be that moved by a story like james frey's. <-- i'll probably kick myself for making that comment after i've finished the book and fallen in love with it, though

reading "skin game" by caroline kettlewell right now.

jake - "a million little pieces" is an excellent book. some parts can be quite intense (the dentist bit.. oi.) but it's great. i received "my friend leonard" for christmas, and i plan to start reading that soon. you're welcome to borrow it once i'm done if you like.

esi - i saw part of the show, and i guess i can see how that can shock them. the book didn't shock me so much as it got to me on a more emotional level. having done drugs myself (obviously not to that point) and knowing people who have gotten to that point, it was completely different for me. i wanted to cry in the end, and i just sat there for about 30 minutes after i put the book down. it really is a good read, but in a different way than most middleclass housewives would see it.

anyone doing the 50 book challenge for this year?
