well, so far i'm only on page 40, but it's about his three year trip around Canada. the subtitle of the book is 'travels in search of canada'. he's a really funny writer, too. you should pick up his novel Happiness(tm).

I started out with Autumn Rhythm...last book...I wish i had been able to find something more recent to start with like..A whore just like the rest..etc..
The way he writes is just so raw and halarious..heh..anything really ..I think there's also a book that compiles all of his previous rock critic writing, im not sure what it's called though..Id recommend anything you can find pretty much, but good luck finding him!! And if you do happen to find this Richard Meltzer store o'eternal supply...do let me know :) |

^if you want to read a good book of contemporary short fiction read "The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories". most of the stories are really good, with a few bad ones tossed in.
do not disturb and the caretaker were my favourite stories. |

seen the movie the day before yesterday, it's okay, but yet a disappointment...but then again it's impossible to capture this story in a movie. i doubt anyone can enjoy that movie much after having read the book. the protagonist is way too humane in it, he's a bloodsucking tick in the book but nothing of that in the movie...sigh...has it aired already over there?? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/ http://www.parfum.film.de/ It's a HUGE success here and everybody is talking 'bout it... I've got several on the go as usual.
Catch A Fire (The Life of Bob Marley) - Timothy White This is a reread, I enjoy it for its insight into Rastafari, Jamaican history and the evolution of reggae and dancehall music as much as for it's description of Bob Marley's life. Vancouver - David Cruise & Alison Griffiths I haven't made it very far yet, but it's basically a historical novel set in Vancouver that starts at the end of the last ice age and continues through history to today. Excellent so far. They certainly did their research. The Monster of the Madidi - Simon Chapman This man's search for a mythical giant ape said to live in the most remote part of the Bolivian Jungle. Makes me jealous as hell . . . definitely torturing my inner travel addict. I started Cuzco:Window on Peru forget the author, but it was published in the sixties or something and seemd so racist, ignorant and imperialist that I couldn't get past the first chapter. I also have to mention one I recently finished: Dangerous Places:Travels on the Edge - Rosa Jordan It was amazing, and stirred up my desire to travel even more. This woman travelled all over Central and South America over the course of 20 years, sometimes with others, sometimes alone...and had amazing experiences including setting up a refuge for endagered jungle cats in the 90's and escaping an Ecuadorian prison in the 70's. |
