Hopefully, my friend and I can do it tonight, I'll post detail pics of us step by step, so if you have the same thing. you can try it out.
The success rate is ok, some it works, some it doesnt. But all I know is I bought it off craigslist, no warranty anymore.. otherwise i would go the xbox route.

just call ms and see if it's been registered to someone. if not, ms will refurb you no questions asked. a buddy of mine got console banned for flashed dvd so he RRoD'd his box and sent it in. no warranty sticker on it at all. got a replacement back in 2.5weeks, live ready.

why would it cost $130? warranty for RRoD is 3 years, so every 360 manufactured falls into that time frame. they'll even send you a prepaid shipping label to send it to them...

To the repair center…and beyond!

Below you will find a complete breakdown of the time it took from the very first call we made to the repair center, to when we finally received a working unit. We had a bit of a unique experience with our system, as the first replacement console we received was defective as well, causing us to go through the procedure a second time.

To compensate, we were told that we would receive overnight shipping for the whole process and a free game. We didn’t actually get the overnight processing (it was the standard shipping instead), but we did receive a copy of Perfect Dark Zero for the trouble.

Sunday May 28th: Xbox 360 experiences red lights of death. The day the games stopped playing.

Monday May 29th: Called Xbox 360 repair center. Explained the problem, and were told that a box would be sent out the next day due to the holiday (Memorial Day).

Friday June 2nd: Received the empty box to ship the 360 back in. It was then packaged up, and sent out that same day.

Wednesday June 7th: The Xbox 360 repair center received our broken console.

Thursday June 8th: A refurbished Xbox 360 system was sent back to us.

Tuesday June 13th: We received our refurbished Xbox 360 system. This unit was also broken, so we called the help center once more and were told a new box would be sent overnight to us. We also had our choice of a free game for the trouble.

Wednesday June 14th: Another box was sent to us for this Xbox 360 unit. It was not marked for overnight shipping like we were told.

Monday June 19th: We received the second empty box for our console.

Tuesday June 20th: The second defective unit was shipped back to the repair center in McAllen, Texas.

Friday June 23rd: Second defective unit was received by the repair center.

Monday June 26th: Another refurbished Xbox 360 console was shipped back to us.

Wednesday June 28th: We received our free copy of Perfect Dark Zero.

Thursday June 29th: We received our third console, and so far, things are in working order.

ya it is a pain in the ass because you're not guaranteed to get a properly repaired console. if i RRoD my plan is to get my refurb then sell it, then go buy a brand new premium with 65nm processor and hdmi with a fresh warranty and no worries about rrod.

As you said, since im ripping out the case, it will void any warranty but that shouldnt be a problem if your friend has done it with no hassle.

as long as the case is still intact then it should be fine. and if they dont accept it i'll take my warranty sticker off and attach it to that box and send it in :P

edit i'll also need to call in the serial# before i buy it to make sure its not reported stolen. registered, i dont care because i can say i bought it from someone on CL.

it might have HDMI, it might use component. But if i purchase a new 360, even if i get the standalone box, it comes with HDMI

SOCOM, GTA, and GT all come out in the next few months. in the meantime there's still some pretty good games. other than that though it's obvious why Sony took longer to release the PS3... they took the time to make sure it worked!!! can't the same for XBOX.

I'll give you that, but GTA is multiplatform so that comment isnt valid.

And GT, most of the cars in the game will have to be purchased via packs right off the bat. Morgan Webb said it - fuck you sony, fuck you.

and socom? RBSix is 20 times better than socom, as is GRAW and those are both avail for Ps3 and Xbox 360.

they took longer to release the ps3 because they had production problems. mind you they did take the time to refine the console which is a +1, but they are not without their fair share of problems.
