^ Heh, I deleted my last post because I got tired of reading myself being bitchy, but I guess I'll redo the comment. I seem to remember the lights for the 3rd stage at Spooky 6 being a lot more dim.

Oh crap, I think I know who that was :|

All in all, I thought it was an excellent event. production quality was great, and other than having room 3 and 4 basically overlapping, and the VIP room was a hallway with some water and some munchies around 3am (who the heck was going to eat at 3am? :P), it was a wicked show. The main room was out of this world.

Huge props to the Shy brothers and to Uh-Oh for putting this one on. I think the bar has been raised yet again. :)

well after 2 days of thinking how to word a review properly, here i go. (prob gonna be long)

picked up hirshee and phan at around 8:30, got our liqour and headed to the party. met up with kraig, lawrence, kamal, harp, bruce and gary to smoke a few j's and have a few beers. then we went over to the ticket booth to grab our passes and to say hi to jenn.

after about a half hour of talking and mingling we decided to head in (this was pretty sweet). so a couple of us, well thats what i thought until i turned around and saw like 30 people, went over to the "dj entrance" to get in. the door guy didnt have a clue about what he was doing and let everyone in after a bit of persuasion. got inside and headed over to area 4. all i can say is that i was hoping for more, i didnt really care becuase i knew me and eric were gonna blow that system anyways lol. walked around drank and so on. went back out to grab the rest of our liqour saw the coq crew and headed back in.

when we got back it was almost time for hirshee to play and play he did! amaan has to be the most one of the most consistent djs in vancouver. props man! then it was time for me and eric to go up, had no idea what i was goin to play. started off with some trancey stuff to continue the vibe that jimmy and deken had started (and to not scare away the nammer crowd that was there :kam: ) and we continued with it, altho i didnt get to play a lot of tracks i wanted to, i still had a blast! thanks to everyone who either stuck around or caught abit of our set. one thing that did make me realize that things have chnaged was the reaction time for when eric dropped castles in the sky........it took a good min or two before people recognized it!

personally for the rest of the night i felt like ass, recovering from a hangover and being half drunk didnt help. wandered around for most of the night, fell asleep in the bleachers for a bit, talked to people here and there.

then around 5? maybe 6? stan asked me and eric to cover for sharaz, but as i was feeling like shit and the air in that room woulda made me puke, i was not in the mood nor mindset to play. took off around 6:30 and fell right alseep

as for the stages area 1 was obviously the main attraction prob one of the best setups ive ever seen. area 2 wasnt so bad as everyone is making it out to be but area 3 and 4 were a lil disappointing. honestly i just dont see the point of even having the stage? but whatever had a good time and saw alot of people i hadnt in yrs

now for the shouts

andrew - u fucking bastard! that chick was damn fine! too bad...... : :PartEkid: ill call u soon and i'll make you that candle light sapporo ichiban dinner we talked about lol

amaan - dood that bk fucked me up man, we shoulda done that money making idea! way to fall asleep! lol

eric - way to "rock it" lol! good times man! sorry about the morn, hope you had a blast!

kraig - way to um give a "ride" in the morning! lol..........its all good man, u get the name of that infiniti track?

lawrence - thanks for the pre tokes and for making me laugh

to everyone else i saw and to all the dj sets i caught (sean, jesse, rich, akeel + emmanuel, jimmy + deken, hirshee) was good seeing you guys again!

If this laser hits you directly in the eye for an extended period of time say ten minutes or more, you will recieve retinal damage.
But the lighting tech did set the big green monster to a smaller beam and a fixed pattern angled 15 degrees up. it was about 8 to 10 feet off the ground so it wasnt going to shoot anyone in the eye there.

in addition the mirrors used in the pacific room are for decoration. higher grade/quality mirrors are used for bouncing lasers. in fact if you paid attention to the beam you would notice that it did not bounce off any mirrors that it hit directly. only small amounts of residual light.

man, if it did bounce off those mirrors...it would've looked pretty sweet though!

Maybe I should do a show design eh Kraig? i havent in a while....

well

I have to say that was one of the better parties I have been to this year for sure , I even found my self dancing in the main room(gasp) I duno how that happend drawn in by the crazy lasers i guess. But the best was the house stage, dope beats all night long....would have been nice to see a little more effort put into that stage but amaan's 2 hour set made up for it!

I didnt even want to leave that party...that was rad!

So, without a doubt that is where the promoter would logically spend their money on production.
All the "real talent" plays on the main stage? 3 of the top breaks producers in the states, and the man that basically founded the american DnB scene were playing in area 2. also, area 2 was packed all night long. theres definetly an audience for it. Area 3 had Hatiras (an extreamly creative, talented and skilled producer/dj), and Christian Alvarez, one of the top house producers and djs in van. not to mention our kickass local djs.

i like trance but thats not why i go to a show. so dont expect me to ever spend my money on a Shy Bros show again. when they threw a plaza party the sound and lighting was absolute shit for everything but the main stage. you can really see what they actually care about. and its not the locals or anything but main room music.

Second: It seams strange that every time something blows up, Kraig is right there. I happen to know that in the 2nd and 3rd room there was a techie for the dedicated for the two of them. end of the day, it really says something when every time something blows up Kraig happens to be there??? Interesting hey???
[/b]
I cant believe you would be this incredibly stupid and insulting so i'm forced to assume you're joking. what do you think? Kraig is sabotaging the stages!? get a life.

no there was NOT a techie for the 3rd room. and if there was a tech for the 2nd room, he certainly didnt keep things running smoothly.

Quote:
Third: the 2nd and 3rd room had a lot of lighting and sound. I happened to count and noticed that there were 8 of the track lights in the 2nd room. As for the 3rd room. it had more sound and lighting then the BC room ever does at a twisted show.
[/b]
The 2nd room was foggy and dark. there were no lights to speak of. there was one laser.

The 3rd room had exactly 4 lights. Which you couldnt even see because the collouseum's flouresent lights were on. Twisted always has more better production values (with the obvious exception of the main room) at their plaza parties.

My highschool plays had more lighting than the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rooms combined.

the sound was plain awful. period. renegade stages at apex had better sound and lighting.

i wasnt fumbling akeel. i have used and know how to set up a sound system. the speaker was cutting out. the first logical thing to do was check the connections as it sounded like the vibration of the cone was loosening the XLR cables connected to the speakers. it just happened the conection was fucked on the other end. which you fixed.

I always notice a lot of you dj's/scenesters complaining about the lack of this or the lack of that...when a lot of you really have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to sound/lighting or visuals.

...this was definately the show of the year as far as production value goes that vancouver has seen in a long time.
akeel. i dont need a degree in sound engineering to know when the sound quality is below par. nor do i need a degree in lighting to know that there is virtually no lights or decoration/production spicing up the atmosphere.

this was not the show of the year for production values. with the exception of the main room i have seen better sound/lighting at korean cultural center, and random parties in the middle of the forest.

Hard to disagree with you here Oliver.

The main stage was the best setup I've seen of any massive I have ever been to.

The rest of the stages needed a bit more TLC... put it this way... stage 3 looked 10 times better once the flourescent lights were turned off... that's weak.

If they took all the lights that were suspended above the middle of the main stage, which most people didn't see anyway, they could have spiced up the remaining 3 stages quite nicely.

There was actually three techs that i saw for sure that were there the whole nite for the entire show. going between all 4 stages. There could have been more...but i only saw three of them. I suspect there where at least 2 others for intelligent lighting control.

That one laser is usually the ONLY laser you see @ the plaza in the main room. And this was in the 2nd room. I have never seen a laser in the BC room or theatre @ plaza, ever...and this would be since the first Sweet show that ever occurred at the plaza.

That one laser costs a small fortune, requires an operator to run and in my opinion is an amazing visual to have in a secondary room.

On top of that I saw 6 technobeam moving head fixtures, various shimmers and other effect lighting. This is equal to the amount of lighting usually seen in the main room of the plaza and is on par with with twisted setups in the main room for lighting effects.

The colliseum has to keep the flouresents on because this was the main entrance so they couldnt be turned off entirely...there's no sense wasting lighting where it cant be seen anyway.

here your just talking smack dude, that laser alone costs something like $30 grand plus, each technobeam moving head fixture is an additional $5 g's....sure maybe your high school had some more par cans...but lets get serious here.

I was at apex....no stage came close to comparing to what was seen @ IMF.
Apex stages have notoriously low budgets of 1 to 2 thousand dollars. This show easily hit 50 grand.

I found the sound crisp through out stage 1 and stage 2. Stage 3 needed to be eq'd properly for the dynamics of that room, which would require someone with some serious skills since your surrounded by echoing, and distortion from the concrete. Stage 4 was shit.

Oliver, i dont mean to rip your post, but honestly it looks like you dont know what you're talking about man. No disrespect but i've seen what happens "backstage" and in the planning rooms for small budget productions and huge ones like this, i've overseen my own small and large productions and worked on many of the shows in this city and others. IMF did not have a lot of the problems you are stating and production value wise....Shy bros and uh oh spent a lot more money than any other company has this year.

The connection on the back of those TX cabinets are speakon 4, not XLR. They consist of a locking twist bracket so they can't be loosened by residual bass vibration.
The first logical thing for any sound tech to do is check the source and then travel down the line.
Audio Source (cd deck or turntable signal)
connectors
Mixer
Processing
amp rack
then speakers

I'm not saying you do...but i am saying that i heard the same things sounds you did, but instead of just saying "the sound is shit" i tend to explain why its shit.

The main room audio was excellent given the difficult dynamics of the colliseum, i found the 2nd room to be crystal clear quality as well, except for how the speaker stacks were laid out and using the dj Monitors as fill (this is always a bad move).

each to their own, they definatly could have spent more time on the 3 other areas particularly area 3 and 4...hell area 4 in my opinion should have been cut out completely

How did this turn into a twisted vs shybros/uh-oh argument? Im sure they spent more money then a plaza party but the capacity (therefor ticket sales) is much higher,am i right? i dont think anyone is saying they didnt spend enough money overall, just maybe that they spent the money in the wrong places... Live and learn right? The boys who through the show put alot of effort into it, it was more then apparent. It just looks like some people didnt agree with where the focus was placed and how some areas fell a little short. plur right?

After slagging the party a while back I went to go see what all the hype was about and good thing I got a free ticket! I wouldnt have paid for that shit otherwise.

I must admit that the main room was the best I have seen in production at any party I have been too! So much time and effort was put into it and it was obvious. But there seems to be a patern Ive seen at all the Shybros parties Ive been to. Every party they do, the other rooms are ALWAYS neglected. They promise "mind blowing sound" but they cheap out and deliver the bare bones. They did it at Riverside, they did it at the plaza and they did it at PNE. Get it together guys and stop making promises you cant keep.

Gumbee and Faline were as shit as I predicted. Rap and AK1200 were the throwing it down from the parts I saw. Im very upset that Sharaz got bumped! What the fuck was up with that? there was so much confusion going on here! Like shouldnt these things be resolved well in advance before the show? Like making up set time slots that all the djs are cool with. You guys bumped the best dj to play in that room. Why the hell didnt you bump Gumbee?

Well in any case, Hatiras's amazed me that night! I didnt know what to expect and he was the bomb! Very creative and sick dj! I hope I see this guy again in parties to come. I got a chance to talk to this guy and he said that the promoters didnt even pick him up for the show from the airport! What the heck? He waited at the airport with no one to meet him there and he took a cab and eventually found out where he was supposed to be and cabbed it there himself. Pretty poor organizational work here peoples. Forgetting a freakin headliner at the airport.

All in all I saw some good acts that night and saw some young titties. It wasnt all it was hyped up to be by no means.
I think these promoters need to step back and possibly do some more smaller shows and get all the basic responsibilites right before jumping in over their head with these bigger shows.

Dont believe the Hype
