I'm flipping through the channels and end up watch Loony Tunes 'Bah Humduck' on Teletoon

How ironic they portray Donald Duck as Scrooge running a mega store and having the whole show plastered with Wal-Mart commercials.

The last one made me sick...

Her: 'Joey wants a Guitar Hero 4, Sally wants a PS3... what do you want dear?'

Him: 'I want a big screen TV'

Want, want want... buy, buy, buy.

Watching and hearing this crap makes me sick.

Yes... call me Scrooge but this isn't even close to what I remember this day is supposed to represent.

i hear you winston... ive been very minimalist this year compared to past xmases.... its all about being with your family and friends.. ya its nice to give/recieve things... but its rediculous to add all that stress to an allready hectic time of year worrying about getting people "something"..

I think that another issue here is depending on television to accurately portray anything.

So what if television commercials scream "buy buy buy"? That's what they've always done and their reason for being there. Just because they happen to adjust the ads to fit in with the time of year doesn't mean they don't harass you to consume any less the rest of the year.

To me Christmas isn't defined by some religion, a televised Christmas special, or even a movie. It's defined by what I want it to mean and what I make it mean by the things that I choose to do to celebrate it with the people that are important to me. So for me Christmas is about eating amazingly good food, drinking, dancing, laughing, playing outside, baking, watching movies, staying up late, and generally being very silly around my favourite people. Oh and of course reminiscing over years past and reliving horrendously embarrassing stories, because those are all of the things that I do this time of year.

Sure gift giving can get stressful if you feel pressure from others to participate, but I LOVE being able to pick something out that I just know the other person is going to enjoy and then seeing their face light up when they open it. Whether that thing is homemade, store bought, or something that can't be wrapped up because it isn't a physical object, doesn't matter.

(uh...sorry for the rant, but I LOVE Christmas. I think it's meaning even more to me now that my sister lives far away, and I won't be living in the same city as either her or my parents next year)

For me it's an excuse to celebrate.

Gifts are nice, but really it's the celebration that's the important part for me.

It's only ever as materialistic as you let it be.
