Fair enough. But said conversation could go south, since its a pretty sensitive issue. Factors are smoking and on private property. Why should he have to comply with Laska's request? This guy probably looks forward to having his cigarette in the only place where he doesn't have to feel like he's bothering anybody.

Myra made a good point. If this guy isn't chain smoking a pack a day out there then the issue is more about Laska compromising.

If this guy lived in that suite before Laska moved in, then it probably would never have been a question. Most would have accepted it from the begining. So all of a sudden this guy moves in and it feels like something was taken away from her.

I don't think you should ask him to stop doing anything. It's his balcony. If it bothers you, just go inside for the 10 minutes that he's smoking, light a candle, take a shit, make some food etc...

Being a good neighbour comes to mind. Being courteous also. I don't think this kind of conversation has to go south, but it's one of those things you have to give to get. You have to have a level of maturity about it though so that you don't come across like a self-entitled douche. And ultimately you are asking them a favour, and should treat it as such.

This guy probably looks forward to having his cigarette in the only place where he doesn't have to feel like he's bothering anybody.

This is why you need to ask with humility and compassion, not act like it's their fault that your day has been bad because they're addicted to cigarettes. If you start behaving like a douche to them (coughing at them in the lobby would be a sure-fire way to do that) they're just going to keep doing it out of spite. Then not only do you have to deal with it on a regular basis, but you've also made an enemy out of a neighbour.

Its fair to assume that this guy's an asshole if he smokes multiple packs a day. Most hardcore smokers are self-indulgent and almost self righteous (when it comes to smoking) to a fault. C'mon its an addiction. Its addictive behaviour. This dude probably wakes up first thing in the morning and hacks up black phlem before his first butt of the day without even considering the fact that he just threw up a tarmac.
