^ John C Dvorak would argue the opposite. He pretty much figures Microsoft is dead in the water with Windows, as it has just become stagnant. He tends to go off on this topic every now and again on the TWIT podcast.
I tend to agree with him on this topic too. The only thing Microsoft has going for them right now is the xbox and their buisness unit, interestingly enough they just split the company into 3 parts. As weird as it sounds, I wouldn't be suprised if apple started to license their OS within the next 5 years. They just have to come up with a proper buisness model to make money off of it. The lastest version of OS X is miles ahead of windows, with smart folders, spotlight and obviously as you know the UNIX back bone and being able to run those apps. I would expect to see an increase in attention on the computing side of things in the next 8 - 12 months with the new x86 macs. As everyone knows Apple makes all their money on their hardware, we also know Jobs is an ego maniac and would never let M$ win the OS battle. The Ipod halo effect has also propelled sales of Mac hardware. I can't comment on their developer support as I'm not a developer but otherwise I'm not sure how they are really ignoring the computing side of things seeing as they just released Tiger. I wrote out a big long rant to Leviathan's post there about how Apple may finally admit defeat against Microsoft, but IE crashed on me and I lost it. How ironic. |
