It would cost us a whole lot more than that. He's dressing room poison. I'd much rather put the money into a scoring defenceman. Salo is a good shot and Ohlund is good for 30 pts, but we need a consistent scorer to open up the ice a bit. I love Bieksa, but I'm not sure we can depend on him after his season last year.
Quite frankly, I'd be happy if we signed anyone in any position who doesn't suck. We need help everywhere, including a backup goalie. I think Auld is available.

I'm aware of his injury. For one, that is a good reason not to put the entire next season on his shoulders. And another, he only had 12 points in 34 games (and 0 points in 9 playoff games before that). Even if he played all 82, that would only prorate to 29 points, thirteen less than he had the year before. I love his style of play. He's by far my fave Canuck defenceman, if not Canuck period, but it would be nice to actually have some depth again just in case he doesn't bounce back with another 40 point season.

I've got hope for Wellwood. The Leafs really damaged that kid, but he's got good numbers. The Nucks have resurrected a fair number of careers, and he seems primed for that.
Backes has not been proven, so I think the Nucks are a little jumpy offering him a three year, 7.5 mill contract. If St. Lou doesn't match and we get him, I'd be happy just to have that kind of possible depth.
At least they're actually looking to pick up more offense this year.

Honestly I wouldn't panic too much. Even with our lack of scoring (which yes, will be frustrating and boring at times), Luongo is still to good of a goalie to let us slip that much.

At this point, there really aren't any UFA's or RFA's that are worthwhile signings. The only thing that would make sense at this point is a trade.

Naslund leaving isn't a big deal. He peaked in the 02/03 season and has been in decline since. And we need his leadership? Not really... (a +/- of -19).

He wasn't performing as well as he could with the Canucks. And it wasn't going to get better. I'm not surprised he went as a free agent.

True, but he was still our captain and he went to the gawddamn Rangers, of all the teams he could have gone to. I hope he gets a career-ending injury in preseason, and, while I'm at it, Avery and Jagr explode (no matter what team they're on at the time).

Good call on the prospects. Maybe if he actually took a wrist shot in the last three years, we'd have done something more. As for a trade, all we've got to deal with is Luongo, the Sedins, and draft picks.

Ryan Johnson is 4th line.

Bernier is 23 years old, has only played 1 true full NHL season, and already has reached 30 points twice. Oh yeah, he also won a U18 World Championship and averaged better than a point a game in the tournament.

Dude is all upside.

Bernier was definitely a good pick up, as long as they can keep his salary under 3 million I'll be pleased.

Everyone needs to accept the fact that we are no longer going to hit a home run, and should be looking to increase some secondary depth so that when the deadline (or next summer) comes, we'll still have enough $$$ to grab the superstars.

[EDIT] Change that 3 mill to 2.5 mill.
