Canucks Offseason Thread

Looks like they're really just pushing to rebuild the team, seemingly from scratch. Hopefully this will get us out of the typical Canucks routine of looking-really-awesome-until-the-pressure's-on. Of course, a bunch of newer players may just plummet us further down into that well, but I guess we'll see come playoff time next year.

our d is top 3 in the league, our goaltender is top 3 on a bad day.

we have an established 4th line, an exceptional 3rd line, and now someone who can play with the sedins to make a 1st line. Were basically looking for 3 more forwards and we have a ton of cap room to do it. the season doesn't start until october.

This works, assuming that the team management thinks as logically as you do.

However, excuse me if I lack faith that the management will be this sensible. Not that I have any reason to believe they'll fuck it up, but my guard is up.

Yeah, we've got some decent youth picks now. I'll give you that. There's a whole lotta questions with this line-up, though. A lot of people are going to have to step up with career years, and our depth is totally dependant on that. At the very least, we need more security on defense. Obviously, every season banks on Luongo, so the priority after scoring (or possibly with scoring) should be an impenetrable defensive core. We know Salo will only play 60 games, Bieksa needs a rebound, and Lukáš KrajÃ*ček is a goomba. As is, we’re a team of second line prospect forwards and fourth line veterans. As long as Luongo is here, we're contenders (despite what Naslund thinks), but management need to impress the fact to him that we're trying to get him some help. He's entering his prime, and I doubt he'll want to hang around rebuild this team from scratch.

^Bernier will be playing on the first line (twins), guaranteed.

Canucks are now coming up with an offer sheet to Fillpula. If they're serious about this, it'll need to be at least 3.5 (probably 4) which right now is overpriced but would be reasonable or a discount in 2 years.

Scoring 3 goals in the last 29 games does not make him an immediate 1st or 2nd liner.

He's going to take some work.

While he may not have 1st/2nd line numbers (at this point), he will certainly be playing on our 1st line. Vinny will give him ample opportunity to prove himself with the twins.

You don't start them on the first or second line.

Because he's in a slump, you put him on the first or second line, and hope that he gets out of it?

Keep in mind that he was on the Third line for buffalo...

Arguing over how good he currently is is trivial. The fact of the matter is, in Vancouver, he'll be playing with the twins, which just so happens to be our 1st line.

Seriously, I would stave off making assumptions like this until training camp. Most line decisions aren't really made until they see how the dynamic works between players anyways.

His performance for Buffalo is what got him the trade. It'll be his interaction with the team, however, that helps them decide which line to put him in. What if they just plain don't have anybody else that would work well with the Sedins? What are you gonna do then, put them in third line?

I'm going to agree with this. I think both Rawb and I are incorrect with our blind assumptions of "putting him on X line will work".

As Rawb said, Pryatt worked well with the sedins, and there you go. On the flipside, if he didn't have that dynamic with the Sedins, it wouldn't have made sense having him on that line.

yo ninjatit what the fuck are you thinking? and what the fuck is buffalo thinking, they hand us bernier after aquiring him for cambell, i think they are as bad at this trading thing as we can be. anyway not the RW i would have put on my wish list or even have thought about but it's a pretty sweet deal, i think buffalo and SJ are just not at the point where they wanted a project, they are in the real game and want big boys.
only thing i am concerned about is trading away draft picks.

and naslund, did anyone think he was coming back? have fun in nyc mate


over all, dissapointed. gillis is a piss ant, the only thing that would give me any faith is if we signed demitra and i don't see that happening.

He aint that great, fuckin Wings won it all with Osgood. We need a better team in front of any NHL starting goalie. Go with the rookie Cory Schneider? Why not, the Canadiens put Price out the wolves. Didn't look very good in the playoffs, but had a great season. Bob Gainey sort of knows what he is doing.
