Back to the topic at hand (not F*R*A*, but minimum wage)...
I work in retail. I'm an assistant manager. I know for a fact (because our payroll dept mentioned it to me the other day) that the going rate for an assistant manager is $345/week (+2% commission). Doing the math (345 divided by 40), that gives you a whopping total of $8.63/hour. As an assistant manager, the responsibilities include running the sales floor, training employees, interviewing prospects when the manager is busy, and organizing paperwork, all while trying to sell as much as possible so that you can make your 2% count for something (side note, at a "big store" like Pac Center or Metro, your commission MIGHT be $200/week, if the sales are there, or if you have time to sell with everything else that you're doing as an AM). Currently, I make $400/week (so $10/hour, + the 2%), and to be perfectly honest, even THAT isn't enough for the work that I have to do. The issue of minimum wage (as much as I agree that it should be increased, if only because it would give me fodder to fight for a reasonable raise, which otherwise I won't get), is moot in my opinion, simply because there will be people like me caught in the crossfire of working for a cheap company who will have to pay the basic employees more and will be too cheap to pay the people that do all the work what they actually deserve. I know that there's going to be people who're going get all up on me to "go back to school and get a decent job and stop bitching!". Again, that's a moot point. Not all people are cut out for years of further schooling. Plus, it's not like there's robots to do my job (yet), so there's going to have to be people like me working those jobs that you all feel are so inferior to your "careers". On the subject of "that's why there's Moosejaw", how is that a fair assumption? Why should I have to leave the city that I've grown up in, where all my family and friends are, where my LIFE is, because you think that because I live from paycheque-to-paycheque I'm somehow inferior and should be living somewhere "I can afford"?
