Why?
Quote:
Why is it so taboo to talk about wage anyway? Maybe the man does'nt want us to compare wages, cause alot of people might realize they are working dead end jobs and getting paid peanuts, and they might get fed up with it! |

i dont understand why or how it would..? maybe i was raised weird like that. knowing someone's financial standing helps me because then i know i can or cannot ask if they want to see a movie with me for instance, or if they want to go on a big trip. everyone makes what they make. its just money i guess... i'll let anyone know exactly how much i have at any given moment if they just ask. which isnt very much at the end of it all |

there's work out their. Tons of it. I get job offers all of the time. My girlfriend quit her job spent a day replying to job postings, did interviews for a week and had 5 job offers. I have no empathy let alone sympathy for them. |

that's not entirely true. it also means i can get a raise for my good performance without the rest of my department knowing and making a fuss about it. management would be less inclined to give out individual raises if everyone knew about them.

thank you for further proving my point.

if management felt less inclined to give raises for good perfromance then people would just leave

Lil Jenna - no more than $14 hourly, and that's if you had previous experience.
This is what I love about having my own business with my own clients. I bring in about $4,000 monthly and work 12-14 days per month on any 4 hours that I can work. Booya. Mind you, the downside to having your own business is that it has it's slow times. Which is why I am looking for something part time, mainly as a fall back plan in case things cease to a halt at Christmas, but also because it's stable. I'm worth easily $23 hourly, plus 3 weeks vacation + profit sharing + extended benefits. |

I have no problem disclosing my salary, I do it all the time. I make a reasonable amount for my position and seniority, so why would I care? If someone tried to guess my salary they would probably get it right. I'd be embarassed if I made more money than I do now.
People that dont discuss their salary usually have a societal hangup (wont tell you who they voted for either), or make too much money relative to their skillset. There are lots of people out there that make too much based on circumstance. |

OK, "the man" part is cheesy, I was going for a bit of sarcasm, which is hard online. Still, could'nt the taboo on not talking about our wages be a bit of social control we put on ourselves? The fact is, money is one of the biggest factors in everyones life, and it's kind of strange we don't like to talk about it. When I'm making good money and someone asks me about my salary, it makes me feel uncomfortable, and when I'm making crap money it does'nt bother me at all....Kinda ties in with what Decypher said about money creating boundries I guess
