the movie was excellent, but only because i read the entire thing. as a representation of the books.. it sucked.

anne rices vampire series is excellent. dark and romantic with some great ideas and great storyline.
who doesnt want to live forever?
The radio plays are hilarious, although I much prefer the BBC miniseries.

As for the vampire series, I especially enjoyed Pandora.

That's all hearsay and second-hand information, but honestly I really can't stand her lofty philosophy... she strikes me as a bit of a goth-poser...

Ever listen to her in interviews? It's like reading a livejournal...
You're pretty much right. Interview With the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, and Pandora are her only worthwhile reads. I fell in love with them around 11 or 12, so that most definitely affects my opinion of them.

^I've read Interview, thought it was alright.

But it wasn't enough to get me to pick up the other books in the series.

Ooh I just remembered another REALLY good one: Sula by Toni Morrison

...and two "children's" books that are even better with an adult perspective are A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh and Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

Griffin & Sabine books by Nick Bantock are some very cool visual art, if you like nonconventional prose.

I generally agree, although I might downgrade "great" to "good".

I'm off the Coupland bandwagon as well.

Everything's Gone Green was dull as dishwater.

Add Alice in Wonderland to that list.

Someone mentioned Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates and Jitterbug Perfume, which I have to enthusiastically second.

Also The Eden Express by Mark Vonnegut. My favorite book of all time. Good luck though. It's been out of print for a long time :(

edit: also Illusions by Richard Bach, and Vancouver (I forget the authors and am too lazy to google, but it is a big fat historical novel set in guess-where that spans thousands of years in the area)

Did anyone mention "Guns, Germs and Steel" in this thread? I'm too lazy/tired to look.

"collected stories" -gabriel garcia marquez. a collection of short stories.

"rogue primate" -john livingston. an essay on "human domestication" which touches on a lot of related subjects (environmentalism, animal rights, ecology, social structure, globalization, etc.). please note that it doesn't touch on these subjects in the usual "pro-/anit-" methodology.

i didn't like "siddhartha" either. i felt like it was telling me things i already knew. like being jesus and reading the bible.

Also, if I didn't say it somewhere already, I'm reading A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. I saw Jon Stewart's interview with him a while back, and finally got my hands on the book (an Xmas present).
