This is true enough, Shy is well known to be the pickiest of the picky. Everyone knows that he only signs producers with an established name for quality tunes, and this is why people will be extra critical of everything.

that being said, Bri is one of the best female dj's I've heard but that percentage of quality dj's for female vs male is MUCH lower for females. I really don't know how to explain it, but girls just don't usually have the technical skills. like if say, for every 100 male dj's (including bedroom dj's) there were 10 good ones, and 2 that really stood out. For girls it seems like there are 5/100 decent dj's and 1 that maybe stands out and none that produce really amazing tunes. So even the one that stands out doesn't compare to the 1/100 male dj's. Its not that they couldn't be as good, I think it's more about the amount of time spent in the studio. Guys are able/willing to do nothing but make beats for 4 years to make it to that point of top notch producers, and (I assume) that girls for the most part just aren't willing to sacrifice that much. All of the top male DnB producers have sacrificed nearly everything to get where they are. I couldn't even name one female "top" producer off the top of my head. Being a hot girl DJ has a lot of perks, but there is also a major drawback in that everyone is that much more critical of you just because you already have an advantage for getting bookings. I think it is REALLY important to back up that advantage with evidence of dedication, because if it's not there then the scene will ignore/slander you all they want. DOA threads piss me off to no end, because most of the criticism is mindless, but all it will take is a real show of dedication and skill and everyone will just stfu. my.02 cents
i don't know about that dabs - maybe in dnb, but there are plenty of female producers/talent that have "made it" and produce quality tunes in other genres. Sure it's still a male dominated scene, but there are definitely successful women in music that actually produce/compose, and there are plenty of female dj/producers that sacrifice a great deal and put a ton of work into their music even if they haven't had the success or recognition yet.

Or there's always the flipside of that, where you post up a mix or a tune on a forum and then *crickets*

Like what's better? 8+ page threads w/ critical, jealous posters and declarations of love at first sight... or no one even moved to respond at all?

ugh - i can agree that a thread where the only person big upping the dj, is the dj has to be the most embarrassing thing ever.

to me djing, is like women trying to skateboard. our centre of gravity is different, makes it a harder skill to learn. in most cases, i would agree with some of those posts as well. most of the top women djs that come to mind marketed themselves while half naked. but above all the female djs that i have had the opportunity to see play, bri is by far the best. hands down.

i dont think this applies to just dnb. i think the other genres are just as hard to break into.

and i dont count lisa lashes, sandra collins, or the rest of those women djs. i havent had the opportunity to see any of them play sober, ever.

most girls in the industry get booked because of their looks ( i guess it brings out a larger crowd?) and not because of their actual talent. This is not true in some cases though such as a few of the djs in vancouver.

ok I'm out of the loop but a girl got signed for producing and her first track is gunna be released but she hasn't even made any yet??

I've made like 150-200 by now, and I'm JUST finally getting on proper labels n' shit

I have seen groups of like engineers and producers making tracks for peope, and they give their input on what to change or whatever.. and the track becomes "theirs" ..... im sorry but thats fuckin lame, if you can't produce and engineer yourself, don't call the track yours and take credit!!!!!

I heard this has been done with certain other people but I'm not gunna comment too much..

this is true. like dabbler said, it takes a certain lifestyle to produce the kind of work that garners recognition.

You basically have to be a hermit for several years, and there's nothing particularly glamorous about that.

interesting thing about actual "djing"

ive been producing since I was 16.. damn near every day .. now gone thru piano lessons, musical theory, now workin in studios with real musicians etc etc blah blah .. 5 years later..

then I finally learned how to DJ with guys in calgary, and it took me like .. 2 days and i could already beat match and scratch / turntablism sorta shit .. maybe it's just me but DJin doesn't really seem that hard. Love it to death tho!!

ya that part is kind of ridiculous. I've been teaching myself how to write/produce for about 9 years now. Even with support from several professionally trained engineers and musicians I still feel I have at least a couple more solid years of studio work to do before I'm at a place where I'm comfortable enough to send it around to labels.

It's difficult to believe that somebody who hasn't even made ONE song is signed..

goodfellow, you have talked for a long time about being a producer, and yet, have shown nothing of your clearly under appreciated talent. please enlighten us!

and as far as bri not having a track produced yet, that doesnt mean there is nothing in the works. digital soundboy had a great explanation as to why she hadnt yet released her tracks. as far as a dj goes, she has worked harder than anyone i know to be where she is. she has never used her looks, or flirted to get where she is.

I've seen a few good female DJs in my time.. a bit tired to think of them right now, but socool made it easy to remember her by posting in this thread.

Her mix _Sub Dub Bass_ still gets play on my stereo =)

I do remember seeing one girl in Sydney who blew me away.. it was at some grungy, lotus-like club in the heart of d/t.. everyone I saw that night was at least decent but she was above and beyond.. looked amazing to boot (sorry, I'm a guy, had to throw that in there).

After her set she was on the dance floor, which just added to her awesomeness. I had to chat with her.. introduced myself, complimented her music/talent, asked what her DJ name was..

"DJ Rare"

Go figure :)

eehh i don't think he's entirely wrong though man, there are many female artists sure but you cannot deny it's dominated by males.

There are a few art forms that are dominated by females like Dance, Fashion and Interior Design.. and some art forms that have roughly equal ratio like Theater. But at the end of the day there are more guys doing the art thing.

I think guys are maybe just genetically more of risk takers and this is conducive for a successful art career.

i dont care if its a lady dj or a fella dj so long as the tracks and the mix is bumpin.

but sex sells.

and bri is pretty sexy.,..wich helps alot but certainly isnt the only reason. you gotta be a good person and work the nettworks. smart people can spot fakers, talkers and posers and bris not that

there are A FUCKING TON of guys who are more talented as a dj and producer then bri is.

...but they dont look like bri.

obviously that dosent knock any of the skills wich bri has...and trust,i remeber seeing one of her very first gigs at the lotus almost 3 or 4 years ago now, shes extremely skilled!!

its just the way it is., i understand and have no problem with that. but it seems that alot of guy dj's are fragile ego-centrics who look for anyway to shit talk people who are more succesfull and justify why they are still nowhere....and as sad as it is its all too easy to use the whole...."oh its cause shes a hot chick thing"/////......i hate hearing that...

guys will pay more attention to her then if its just another hooodie, hat, sneaker wearing chain smokin knob twiddler.....i know i SURE DO LOL...
