Jenn (SROE) is absolutely brilliant. From what I understand she has her own LP coming out real soon (going to be pressed).

one idea that never seems to get explored in these types of conversations (male v. female) is that maybe it's not about one gender having some sort of genetic disposition making them better or worse at something but rather girls just aren't interesting in the same things as men. maybe because girls are generally less interested in something like DJing (obviously) less of them are going to try it and even less of them are going to be good at it. my personal experience has been that when girls DO want to do something that is male dominated (like DJing, snowboarding, sound engineering) they have blown their male counterparts out of the water. but judging by this thread, other people have had a range of different experiences.
i think chicks who get ahead because they're pretty is fucking lame, especially when they make a point to take advantage of it, but at the same time i can't really blame them. i think dabbler made a good point though: that the looks thing will fast track you to a point but then it gets a lot harder to get any further from there. i don't think that's gender specific either. |

I love music, I love playing it, I love manipulating it, mixing it, editing, remixing it, making it, and playing it out to crowds of ppl. But if there is anything I cant get, its the tech side of it. The trouble I go through to learn how to deal with recording, files, down loading, working programs, hosting, links, erggg I hate it! I have no problem setting up your basic gear, working a mixer, putting on a set of needles (hands on stuff) but anything further and im clueless.
Iduno where im going with this, but I do remember illesha mentioning something simular once before where she doesnt give a crap how the technology's she uses operates (unlike the guys) because all shes interested in is how to use it. And I can totally agree, I guess its like guys and their cars. All they talk about is what kind of engine they have and the gadgets they add on to it. Honestly I have no idea what make my car is or what horse power it has, but I sure love to drive it, and have been told Im one of "the best" parallel parkers out there :D Iduno maybe thats what separates us and leads a lot of guys to think that female dj's just arnt as "skilled". People think that girls have it easier getting success with djing, but earning respect and being taken seriously is far more harder for us. Anyways, one of the most important things Ive been told in this industry is that you cant please everyone. Anyone that knows Bri knows how much dignity she holds for her self and her music, I wouldn't worry so much about the crap talk. If anything it should push her harder to prove them wrong. ^ all a girl needs as a basic understanding of how the gear works, and how to manipulate & operate it. That, with a sense of rhythm, and basic understanding of the form of the particular genre of music their playing. All electronic music is in common meter (or 4/4). I've still yet to be shown a track that isn't. (anyone is welcome to challenge me on this)
I look at Lady D from Toronto, Jimni Cricket, and Mandora Mew from Seattle, Holly C from Ottawa, and Elyptic from Sudbury. They all excel from most males I've seen on turntables. And they aren't very technically inclined. As a polar opposite, I'm extremely technical, and I never made it anywhere. |

Suv - Free by Four - 3/4 suv - everybody plays the same 3/4 transitions to 4/4 UNKLE - Rabbit in your headlights - 6/8 Kraak & Smaak - 5 to 4 - 5/4 The entire Lamb - Fear of Fours album - lots of different time signatures in there... i think you meant "dance music" as opposed to "electronic music" as there's plenty of electronic music that's not in 4/4. Dance music on the other had is generally 4/4 although there are again exceptions. Last edited by dj_soo; Dec 27, 07 at 04:11 AM. |

Anne Clark - Our Darkness is in 4/4 time but the bars are patterned in groups of six.
