male djs vs. female djs

i read a really crappy review of a dj that i really respect.i was shocked to see that a community that prides itself with such forward thinking be so against female djs and question their talent.

are men more talented when it comes to electronic? are females only successful in this biz if they are hot?

ive seen/heard a ton of djs of this site trainwreck

ive seen pro djs like lashes trainwreck fucking hardhouse

ive seen dudes and chicks trainwreck

i dont think gender has much to do with it skill wise, but hot chicks have alot easier time being marketed and if there really hot it would probly even make up for the fact that they actually suck on the decks.

the only really big female dj's I can think of don't really do anything particularly special on the decks.

there are a few exceptions of course. DJ Shortee is probably the first to come to mind, but other than a select few it's a very male dominated scene.

I don't know why that is, just my observation.

Ill esha can throw down on the decks, that's for damn sure..

DJing is more about making music with the decks, than it is about just blending tracks together IMO.

I would say for sure being a hot girl can get you far without a lot of skills/talent, but I've seen guys throw in pre-recorded mixes before too.. and pretend like they're using the mixer, it's a joke.

I dno I'm not gunna comment too much, I haven't seen enough female DJs to really form an opinion.

oh ya FYI

if you took a dude and a hot chick, and they spun the exact same set beat for beat id tell you the chick was better everytime.

MMMmm hot chick

I can't speak for the other guys, but I was being honest.

Gender has no bearing on talent level.
It may play a part in how a person decides to use their musical ability if they are musically inclined, but to say male musicians are better than female musicians is just bullshit.

1. no, but women are so scarce that it is easy to assume that.
2. i can't think of any un-attractive female dj's. Take from that what you will.

I would come out more to see a girl DJ spinning, rather than a dude spinning the same stuff. Honest opinion.

i've never heard/seen a female dj that i would call anything above 'average' in the last 10 years
this includes hiphop/turntablism/prog/dnb, i might make an exception for a few deep house djs

it doesnt help that there's only 1 in 20 that are girls to begin with, but there's no real reason why a female couldnt become a great dj. I've just never seen it happen..

hmm..I think a dj regardless of their gender is treated the way that they choose to market themselves (of course there are exceptions)

i was reluctant to post the original review, as i felt it was so inflammatory and didnt want to draw undue negative attention to the person....

but the question was inevitable

Yeah I think it shouldn't have to be about gender, looks, etc, and tend to conduct myself accordingly.

The Bri thing is confusing to people because she got signed to a label but hasn't actually produced any music. Correct me if I'm wrong, etc.

yeah, most of the people posting that stuff probably don't know the hard work she's put in to get where she is today...still doesn't make what they say right, but...

When it comes to things like music(as opposed to shot put) women are just as good as men. But this scene may not be as accommodating to women who are not shockingly gorgeous as compared to the average girl. The women are out there but its similar to physics, women can do it, but because of a variety of reasons culturally the ratio is pretty skewed.

i get that part of it, but i think they were pretty clear in saying when her first release would be.
but they were calling out her mixes, saying they were all the same tempo, making it easy, blah blah blah.

but many made a good point, that if it was a guy, no one would have said a thing.

i love bri to death and I think she deserves her success, but to be frank, if it were a guy, he wouldn't have been signed to Digital Soundboy without one tune to his name.

her mix sounds live to me...

that being said, Bri is one of the best female dj's I've heard but that percentage of quality dj's for female vs male is MUCH lower for females. I really don't know how to explain it, but girls just don't usually have the technical skills. like if say, for every 100 male dj's (including bedroom dj's) there were 10 good ones, and 2 that really stood out. For girls it seems like there are 5/100 decent dj's and 1 that maybe stands out and none that produce really amazing tunes. So even the one that stands out doesn't compare to the 1/100 male dj's. Its not that they couldn't be as good, I think it's more about the amount of time spent in the studio. Guys are able/willing to do nothing but make beats for 4 years to make it to that point of top notch producers, and (I assume) that girls for the most part just aren't willing to sacrifice that much. All of the top male DnB producers have sacrificed nearly everything to get where they are. I couldn't even name one female "top" producer off the top of my head. Being a hot girl DJ has a lot of perks, but there is also a major drawback in that everyone is that much more critical of you just because you already have an advantage for getting bookings. I think it is REALLY important to back up that advantage with evidence of dedication, because if it's not there then the scene will ignore/slander you all they want. DOA threads piss me off to no end, because most of the criticism is mindless, but all it will take is a real show of dedication and skill and everyone will just stfu. my.02 cents
