i learned from a tatterist survival manual that the best way to encounter houses is by kicking hte door directly at the point where the door jamb is. This is where the point to the immediate left of the doorknob at the frame. Note that this tip does not work with steel-reinforced doors at all. This is consistently the prime means of entry of thiefs.
Though the prime means of entry into a multiple-unit residence is to be come a resident.
