Somehow I guess that definitions will be central for this kind of debate. Or rather, a theologist trying to define it broadly and the atheist trying to define it narrowly.

I think my mum went to this. She's currently taking courses at Vancouver School Of Theology, looking to become a minister in the UCC.

And this oversimplified version of theology is the main reason that ignorant masses are starting to flock towards atheism.

No, you don't understand. The only people who actually want ID are already religious nuts. All it's doing is convincing the sane rational people that religion is a bunch of bullshit.

I'm pretty spiritual (aka "a hippie") but I even find myself arguing for atheists just because too many fundies are trying to pass spiritual philosophy as science, which it just plain isn't.

It comes down to it though. A lot of people refuse to actually look at the Bible as a historical reference, and more as "The Word Of God" that the fundies claim it to be, so they just reject the text altogether. This is folly, if you ask me, because the fundies don't even read the book for what it is.

Prophecy is not about predicting the future or being morally righteous. It's about saying how things are and how things will turn out if you continue down the path that you are currently walking down. Revelations is not supposed to be a prediction of the end of days but rather a concerned outlook on the political landscape of the time - war in the holy land, fools in charge of militaries, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes.... There's a reason that modern day politics make it look like we're in the end of times.... because these things have been true ever since Revalations was written.

Religion serves two purposes: Prophecy (which is where the morality comes from) and Fellowship (which is where communion comes from). Moral indignation, ecclesiastical corruption and political influence are unfortunate side-effects of those who choose to use those methods to exploit and control their congregations.

Anybody who says that following the Bible to a tee is the only way to be morally righteous is a religious nut, yes.

Go read Deuteronomy or Leviticus cover to cover and count the number of reasons you're going to hell. If it's anything less than 100 you're probably Amish.

Intelligent Design doesn't support the Bible. It doesn't support anything. IT'S NOT SCIENCE.
