Well an honest answer is that cellular coverage should not be considered as reliable anywhere because it cannot operate 100% of the places you go 100% of the time. Even if there is coverage available, simple things like the direction/speed of the wind, weather conditions, nearby construction, amount of users in the area, etc. can affect the network.
I'd say you're safe to bring your phone, but your carrier can't really say that you'll get flawless coverage because they don't have their own towers set up down there. you're probably best off calling Rogers because I have no idea what their policies/procedures are as far as a pre-auth requirement, etc. |

I called into Customer Support,
They said, as long as your account does not have any restrictions on it regards to international roaming you will be able to recieve all calls, texts, emails ect. The cost to receive calls is, 3.50/min (That covers roaming and long distance) Last edited by Pussy*Kat; Mar 13, 08 at 11:45 AM. |

if you buy a pay and talk phone down there not only will you save money but you'll have a phone to use next time you go back
trust your intuition avana, you were right depending on what 'zone' you are in (you'll have to call your carrier to find what cityregion zone you're in, they're are 3 zones in mexico) ... expect to pay $1.50-$3.50/minute and if you're billed per minute a 5 second call can potentially cost you $3.50 also, don't get me started on data roaming if your phone even connects to it ... in the states it's $8/megabyte lol! so all in all ... buy a P&T phone |

i phoned a friend of mine who travels a tonne and he said the same thing. he said to wait till i was out of the airport though, as it was cheaper at the wal-mart like stores in town. does telus or bell charge to forward to an international phone? (for those in the know) |

I have a US number and I've been using it a bit down here (Cancun), I'm with AT&T and it's about $1 per minute. Last time in was here I used my Canadian number on Fido (Rogers has the same rates) and it was $4 per minute to call out and $3 per minute to receive calls. My phone bill was $1400 and I didn't use it THAT much. My advice: if this call is going to be a quick, one-time thing, just bring your phone and take the call. Just ignore anyone else who calls and get back to them when you get home. Since you have a GSM phone you could just have it unlocked and drop a Mexican SIM in it - that's what I do with my US and Canadian SIMs depending on where I am! G'luck and have fun! I dunno where in Mexico you're going but I hope the weather is better for you that it has been for us this week - it rained a few times and has only been in the mid-20s =\ Last edited by galaxie; Mar 14, 08 at 10:12 PM. |
