hey fucksticks, I thought everything was rainbows and sunshine??
I don't want to be an ALARMIST KOOK LIZARD BELIEVIN' GUN TOTIN CONSPIRACY THEORIST PATRIOT, but I'm afraid genocide is happening at our doorstep and Jon Stewart is asleep at the wheel again.
I fully support Kevin Annett, he's done a lot to bring light to this issue.
It actually made the headlines fairly regularly since 2005 as the hearings and investigations concluded. The government has issued an apology and billions to compensate the victims of this horrible system. It can't compare to what people had to go through, but it is a start.
It's sad that the United Church still hasn't taken responsibility, although it was good to see the Vatican make a statement.

Why do you keep using present tense? The last school shut down in 1996...

as of 1998 the United Church General Council Executive has apologized (formally admitted responsibility) for their part in Native Residential Schools. In fact, they were the first Church to do anything of the sort.
I was actually a voting member of the 1997 BC Conference that petitioned General Council to apologize, and it was voted through with full concurrence (I think the vote was something like 498 to 2). The petition was sent up to GC where it was amended to "repent" (ie. say this was bad) but not apologize (ie. admit fault). This was actually one of the main reasons I left the Church. They reported the formal apology to the 2000 General Council.
Actually, they apologized in 1986, and the 1998 apology was specifically for those who were sexually abused in the schools, specifically as brought forth by the Port Alberni congregation, where a number of the abuses took place.

^ i feel like '96 is pretty fuckin recent. didn't even watch the videos but based on the replies this is about the residential schools right?
it's also about the ongoing pedophile sex rings and snuff film industry and the hundreds of missing aboriginal women that RCMP doesn't give a fuck about.
