The End of the Industrial Age

Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky proclamation of a doomsday cult, apocalypse bible prophecy sect, or conspiracy theory society. Rather, it is the scientific conclusion of the best paid, most widely respected geologists, physicists, and investment bankers in the world. These are rational, professional, conservative individuals who are absolutely terrified by a phenomenon known as global “Peak Oil.”

http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/PageOne.html

Essentially, we're running out of oil folks. The same oil that runs our cars, our industries, our economy, and even our modern agriculture. They say that in the animal kingdom, an organism's tendency towards violence is directly proportional to the scarcity of resources.

I think this is what we see the US doing. Securing the world's last oil resources while China is industrializing. By controlling the oil, they are making a last gasp effort to control the world as long as they can.

Your thoughts? :)

Essentially you have to do more research and realize that there are vast Oil and Gas reserves here in Canada that are yet untapped. The coast of British Columbia, the Oil Sands in Alberta and there is large areas under the Polar Ice Caps as well.

hopefully the oil supply doesnt run out in our life time...
these fossil fuels we'ved used over the years hanvnt been very good for our environment..the coal, oil, and natural gas that have been used since the industrial revolutrion has caused an increased amount of C02, and gases in the atmosphere trap the heat energy from the sun which causes global warming...these rising temperatures can have profound effects of life on earth...but fortunatly there are many sustainable energy sources to lessen the dependance of fossil fuels...
green peace predicts that in 20 years windpower could power 10 percent of the worldselectricity...
so i think with oil running out we still have quite a few years untill taht happens but when it does.. well just have to adapt....
find other ways to power the earth

The only reason the coast of BC is untapped, is because of the environmentalists. Since the vast amount of wildlife and the habitat that enhabits the coast, an oil spill would be pretty damn drastic on the west coast.

rather not cause proven reserves show that we have ample oil left in the world for a good while longer and they are inching ever closer to hydrogen fuelcell technology.. The US government even has a fleet of Fuel cell cars in Washington DC and helped build the first Hydrogen fuel pump. So in non crackpot whacko reality Im not that afraid of running out of oil some time soon.

Uh.. why hasn't fuel cell taken off then? Look up Ballard and see how this company is almost worthless by now.

maaan, I'm so tired about hearing about peak oil. if we reach peak oil that means we 1/2 way through all the oil reserves on the planet. Now, keeping in mind that it's unlike that in the even of a 2nd world was EVERYTHING will run on gas (we got nuclear subs & ships)and that even in the event of such calamity the warmachine is a LOT more efficient that that of 1945 I think we're gonna be OKAY, it's not like gas is getting run out of the system in a HUGE hurry, but it IS be slowly weened away from us, even it's it's ever so slowly. gas is just gonna get more COSTLY, what'll happen then? wide spread panic? terror?

er. how about hybrids?

Good. Let the oil disappear and let's start looking at renewable energy sources.

The sun is still going to exist (theoretically) for a long time. So we've got a ways to go before we're really in trouble.

we always knew it couldn't last.

and i for one can't wait to find out what happens after this.

if it all goes awry i'm building a raft and sailing it out into the middle of the ocean. here's hoping people stop burying their heads in the sand and pretending fossil fuels can go on providing for our needs without any consequences.

Cause they have yet to find a way to mass produce the hydrogen

Go read the Hydrogen Economy by Jeremy Rifkin, there is only 20 - 30 year gap between the most optomistic and pessimistic view on when the world will reach peak oil production. I can tell you that fuel cell technology in cars is not going to happen for a long time yet. I could get into the details if you want. Just because there are some fuel cell cars putting along doesn't mean the technology is anywhere near being ready for consumer use. There are some huge obsticals that need to be overcome.

Because the technology isn't ready for everyday use yet and all stocks were overly inflated during the dot com boom. Looking at stock price insn't a very good indicator of much really.

One piece of the puzzle but thats not the only reason. Hydrogen can be extracted from quite a bit of stuff rather easily, hydrogen is used in other industries besides fuel cells. DMFC stack technology that works on higher powered stacks would make the hydrogen infrastructure much easier to deal with.

yes but it takes electricity or heat to extract from the most readily available source water. Which means your gonna use some sort of fuel to make hydrogen.. My dad supplies the stuff to them since one of thiere plants is close to his in North Van..

The hydrogen used for initial fuel cell cars will most likely come from natural gas. It can also be reformed out of methanol, which by the way has a higher hydrogen storage density than even liquid hydrogen. Electrolyzing water is not an option for alot of places do to high electricity costs.

yes very true I mean the cell technology is here now cars could work wonderfully on the stuff we jsut cant mass produce the hydrogen needed as of yet..
