in conclusion .. tsunami can occur where ever the tectonic plates move against each other... so a tsunami can occur on the other side of the islands or near tokyo.... it might not be as severe as the epicenter but it can and does happen...as long as there is relative motion between two or more plates and water then a tsunami will occur....
Yes true! It's just the way you were saying it before it sounded like you ment a wave could happen ANYWHERE as a result of plate movement.

Erik nothing in that link had ANYTHING to do with what we're talking about. It was just about history and driving mechanisms.

I have no idea how plates got involved... Someone asked if Tokyo was effected... UM not only is Tokyo in an other ocean, but a good fraction of earth away!

That is devestating.

I have been in earthquakes before and have seen the damge formyself. But this earthquake is just incredible. Tha'ts the brute force of mother nature.

We're next right? We are in the ring of fire.

edit: We as in the Pacific North West.

The shockwaves travel quite far. If there is an Earthquake in Tokyo, there is the possibility of it causing a Tsunami that can reach the BC Coast. I believe it's happened before.

I know they've got Tsunami/Wave Monitoring Equipment on Langara Island to provide early warning of such things. My Parents and myself lived there for awhile. There's also a fault line that cuts through that Island. What a lovely volitile part of the Coast we live on.

The sad part of all of this is it could have been avoided. Alaska, Hawaii and other coastal cities all have monitoring equipment for off shore earthquakes. A simple siren, along the beaches of coastal cities would have been enough time for people to head inland. Maybe now the govt will pay for the equipment.

:(

Even sader is the goverment probly cant afford such things. Its quite the learning experince when visiting a 3rd world country and seeing how they dont have the safty we do here.
Walking down the streets of Bangkok and welders would work only a meter above the bissy side walks... Not even a sighn to warn ppl of the dangerouse sparks raining down.
If you walk by a construction zone... all the workers have are helmets, a scarf around their mouth, and sighns posted in Thia & English "Safty First"

It's crazy. The freakiest part is these people weren't warned. The earthquake happened in the sea, and a few hours later the tidal wave hit. People had no way of knowing about the wave. What if someone was sleeping and suddenly you just wake up to the sound of the water crashing into your house? *shudders*

If a quake were to hit tokyo, and send a tidal wave through the ocean to here, wouldn't we pick up on it? It would take more than a few hours wouldn't it?

Also, I read our government is giving $1 million for the cause. I think it's great, but I'm wondering if we really have the money for that.
