its not a question of his skill or his ability (which i think is very good, but im not really checking for him), it's the fact that if you are launching a new act (chris brown, dj khalid) or revamping someone established (robin thicke, destiny's child) or just introducing your new single to have a bit more cred (fat joe, lil brother) you put lil wayne on it. the vastness of popular singles that lil wayne has his stamp on is incredible.
he's on the cover of xxl/the source/vibe/rolling stone every 2 or 3 months. last year vibe did an article on him where they rated his 77 releases that year in order of best to last... 77! cypress hill was fine and thats great, but nobody is mentioning anyone from cypress hill in the top 50 MCs of all time, where you would be hard pressed to find a list that doesn't include wayne. when you go to a hip hop club, if you dont hear at least 3 wayne tracks in a night you probably left early. |

The Beatles haven't released an album in 40 years. And yet, they still aren't irrelevant or unpopular, as the 2007 Golden Globe/Academy Award nominated film Across The Universe and the continuing Cirque du Soleil show attest (not to mention the millions of CDs they still sell every year). Unless of course you're trying to say your parents and every generation of human beings before the current high school age is irrelevant, 'cause that's just sad. They all still exist, you know. Paul McCartney is still selling out arenas and shipping platinum (his 2007 album sold 1.5 million). You know, our generation really is the worst yet. The '80s have nothing on us and as soon as we kill all the ecosystems that support our being, we'll all be the same level of irrelevant. Have a good night. Quote:

In all seriousness, I don't mind Lil' Wayne (though I hate his dumb-ass name). I'm not much of a Kayne West fan either, but I don't hate them. There is worse rap in the charts. Fighting unjustified hype is merely a hobby of mine, and this killed hours at work. Thanks for your time. Last edited by Mangle; Jun 02, 08 at 07:40 PM. |

as one who generally disagrees with mangle, or pretends to, just to get him riled up, i must say he makes some good points this time.
just because lil wayne is topping every chart these days doesnt necessarily mean anyone will know who he is in 5 years. maybe it does. ive never heard of him, anyways. but the fact that cypress hill is even included in this argument is evidence enough that thier material has serious longevity, regardless of actual MCing skill. having longevity (and thus relevance) isnt about just topping charts, its about having a sound that is unique and timeless. now i cant go about trash talking lil wayne because i havent a clue what he sounds like. but the fact that he couldnt come up with anything more original than "lil wayne" as his stage name might reveal a thing or two about his uniqueness no? just sayin. ps rawb more capitals please |

CYPRESS HILL HAD 3 TOP 10 HITS IN THEIR CAREER. IN COMPARISON, LIL WAYNE HAD MORE THAN 3 TOP 10 HITS IN THE LAST YEAR
CYPRESS HILL HAD THEIR FIRST HIT IN 93 AND THEN PETERED OUT TOWARDS THAT HORRIBLE ROCK SUPERSTAR TRACK IN 2000. LIL WAYNE HAD HIS FIRST HIT IN 98 AND STILL MAKES HITS TODAY. JUST SAYIN. l Last edited by rawb; Jun 03, 08 at 08:56 AM. |

I guess the irony of it all, is that despite the lack of creativity in his name Lil Wayne has a style of his own when it comes to lyrical content and delivery. Last edited by matéo; Jun 03, 08 at 10:09 AM. Reason: sp. |

really? cuz the only good part about that tune you linked to above, is the beat, and its not his.
everything i hear of his sucks balls. shitty beats (i hate that type of "hip hop" that rules club charts these days) and I HATE his voice ATARI COOL KIDS: LIL WAYNE - THA CARTER III CD REVIEW 2008 Last edited by dabbler; Jun 03, 08 at 10:33 AM. |

lol @ mangle
dude mangle, why do you have to be a try hard in every thread? cypriss hill hasn't been good for like 10 years..... there are a lot more relevant rappers, who are releasing albums in 07 and 08, that are better than lil Wayne. atmosphere, killah priest, cunninlynguist, brother ali, AZ...... etc etc wayne is a bit of a goof and I don't think this lyrical skill is overly impressive for the record. he hops on mainstream hit type tracks. If you hear him live he doesn't sound the same.. |
