home remedies?
So I have this EVIL cold right now. I got no sleep last night and had to go home from work early today due to a dry, unproductive hacking cough (one of the worst coughs I can remember having), muscle aches and a runny nose.
What feel-better secrets do you guys use? Don't recommend antibiotics, I'm 99% sure it's a virus. I have been sucking back tea, hot soup and Buckley's and am coated in a sexy Vicks vapo-rub sheen. I already took a hot bath and have been laying on the couch all day. I still feel like shit. :cry: Help. (bonus points if I don't have to leave the house) |

Okay this is going to sound really fucked up, but it works.
I had a horrible cough a month ago, and my friend was like "eat garlic" I thought he was fucking with me, but he said his mom used to always give him a clove of garlic inbetween a piece of bread, and it immediately took away his cough. I tried it, and it works... No bullshit it works REALLY well.. It immediately took my cough away and i felt WAY better afterwards. Worked WAY better then buckleys or neo citron or any other stupid thing i've taken in the past. Eating a bowl of pho with extra onions also helps relieve your throat. Though the garlic is my #1 suggestion and i wish i knew about it sooner |

what actually does make me feel a lot better, is just to forget that i have a cold, and just go about my daily business as usual, with a lot of kleenex usage of course, and a lot of water drinkage. If i can't sleep, i just run around or do some workouts to get me exhausted. puts me right to sleep.

-slippery elm -goldenseal root -nightly neocitran DM that cured me pretty quick. the slippery elm and goldenseal root you might have to go to a more 'all natural' vitamin store to find, but i was surprised at how much they helped (as opposed to just coldfx; the neocitran DM was just the end of the day kicker). |

Im the kind of person that maybe takes 1 day off work/school and can tough out the rest of a really bad cold or flue for less than a week. I refuse to take anti-biotics and like to avoid medicine as much as possible. Here is what I tend to do as soon as I really start to feel a cold or flue coming:
- Tons of fluids: water, Juice (not from concentrate), water, juice, tea, juice, water, juice, especially that happy planets juice. One Big bottle of Happy Planet Extreme Green does wonders. - Hot water and honey - Hot water and lemon juice - Gargle salt water - Ridiculous amounts of Vitimine C. By this Im talking FRESH VEG AND FRUIT, not suplaments, caned, or processed types. Origanic fruits and vegs will probably have more nutirants in them. - Garlic is great - NO DAIRY - No coffee/alcohol or other foods that will dehydrate your body. But a few sips of good hard dark rum may actually help. - Minimal protein - Chicken noodle soup - Echinaceia - Exercise if you have the energy. - Lots of sleep 9-12 hours - Advil/tylonal only to get me through work - nyquil cold and flu only to put me to sleep at night Last edited by R Wellbelove; Jan 05, 08 at 03:39 PM. |

One time I was soo sick and my friend told me to make a 'tea' with the following:
- paprika - garlic - ginger - honey - fresh lemon Yes, the mixture looks disgusting, and it doesn't taste great, but it helped my symptoms a lot. The best way to do it is to throw all of your ingredients into a pot and simmer it for about 20 mins. |

Make sure you're getting 3000mg of Vit C and Odorless garlic, as well as enough echinicia (sp?). I recommend chewable Vit C, and take 1000mg 3x a day. Same with odrless garlic capsules. The echinicia (sp?) I'm less certain fo the amounts, but a pharmacist can help you while you're picking up the rest of the stuff. Also, like Rhia said, avoid dairy. There's also a natural "cold fx" alternative that I have used before called Cold a-tak Echinilin... ts all organic herbal extract based.

garlic, vitamin C, and echinacea all have immune system strengthening properties. beyond that drink lots of liquids and eat soup. rest and sleep as much as possible I usually make a onion/chicken noodle soup with a crap load of garlic in it. happy planet juice has so many naturally occurring vitamins it's not even funny.
avoid caffeine, alcohol, and do not smoke anything. if you're running a fever a single Tylenol should suffice. otherwise most all of those over the counter medications actually suppress your immune system and only offer temporary relief of systems but will prolong your illness. I'll admit to taking sleeping medications like Neo Citron on occasion when I really can't sleep though as I feel sleep and rest is probably the most important factor in getting better. |
