I dunno, I see where you guys are trying to go with this but I just disagree - some people just don't care about this whole "altered state of conciousness" that you're talking about. Personally, I hate being under the influence of any type of substance that changes the way I feel and operate as a person. I think the "buying a new purse" comparison is a huge stretch - that's called excitement, not being high. And the feeling of love is purely subjective - I think that lust and obsession create an unhealthy buzz, whereas the feeling of "love" differs from person to person and, IMO, shouldn't be called a "buzz" or a "high".

First off, thinking that drinking is cool is thinking that an altered state of mind is cool. You can't refute that intoxication is a different state of mind. Whether you choose to continue to drink or not, you have still tried it and you were curious nonetheless.
As for your second point, emotions are the strongest mind-altering influence known to man. Anger, jealousy, love, lust, .. many people kill when these become strong enough. People act differently when they experience strong emotions. Why do you think there's a distinct difference between cold blooded killing and a crime of passion?
