Getting fired/layed off...
Is the worst feeling...
I've been with the company I worked with for 5 1/2yrs and they won't even let me take 2-3 mnths leave of absense due to my school??? That's fuckin BULLSHIT! I won't even be getting EI...Cause they never fired me...They kinda sat down with me told me that my only options were to leave on my own terms and come back in Aug IF a position was available when I had a clearer idea of my availabilty... The HR person was telling me when you finish school don't you wanna be working as a cook FT? Honestly even if that was available I wouldn't...Just cause cooking is so low paying...I would like to do it PT and PT at the office where I'm getting $15/hr! Fuck I hope when they said to call them back after when done with school wasn't just a lie to make me leave on my own terms so they didn't have to pay me EI and to let me go more nicely...*sigh* :( |

I learnt a long time ago that your employers don't give two shits about you. You should not give two shits about them. Really depends on where you work, but when it's a real business who's there to make money, this is usually the case.
They have every right to force you to leave...and so they will. http://www.labour.gov.bc.ca/esb/esaguide/#14 I feel ya though. |

peter.. i work in a pretty "casual dining restaurant" and our recruit/dishwasher starts at 10.50 an hour.. and once u work up the line u can EASILY get 15 dollars an hour..cuz remember you get tipped out as a chef as well. $15 dollars and hour is not hard to beat.. and ALSO.. working in the kitchen means long hours which easily works up to overtime as well.

To me, asking for 3 months leave FOR SCHOOL is kindaaaaa pushing it. There are many people out there who take on both school and work in conjunction, and I would be very very surprised if there were many employers out there who were willing to accept just a leave of absence for school purposes.
Personally, if I wanted 3 months off for WHATEVER reason, I'd just quit the job and reapply again, and make sure to leave the company on good terms so the likelihood of them rehiring me would be high, esp. if I wanted to go back to the company. 3 months IS a long time. Anyways, I hope you're able to find something that's more accomodating for you. I don't know what kind of school commitments you have, but there ARE great companies and supervisors out there that are actually very supportive of students. They may seem few and far between, but they are out there. |
