i spoke with my father once this winter, and it was the most unpleasant 30 second conversation i've had in a long time. before that i hadn't talked to him since i left 8 years ago. he wouldn't pick up if i called. the only reason he did this winter is because i was calling from my new cell in phoenix and he didn't know the number. he didn't even know i had moved out of the country.
he's a fucking jerk, choosing religion over his daughter.

my mom, well, she's not the mothering type. my aunt even phoned and expressed that she understood that my mother never really was a mother after my parents split when i was 9, so that aunt offered to provide any what my mother didn't. my mom does put in the token effort but really, it's always "let's talk about me and my new boyfriends..." it's always been that way.
now that i'm grown and don't need her in the same way i did when i was a teen, we have a far healthier relationship. not living with her has helped immensly. she's more of an entertaining friend now.

I know you are not whining, but i think you could benefit from some introspection as well.

The relationships between a father and son are never easy, even as you get older. I spent my first 16 years getting shit kicked by my dad, and the next ten being looked down on. But neither of us ever quit on eachother, and my father made his amends, and i chose to forgive. Happy ending? Perhaps. We will never have the sitcom relationship, but i tell you, after 26 years of fucked upness, one of the greatest things that has happened to me, is the relationship I now have with my father.

Often with men, comes ego and ineffective stubborness. The ego is singularely one the biggest roadblocks to sincere, honest closeness. Give it some time. Take a leap of faith, and employ some more patience and persistance in your life.
