AN ISP'S RESPONSIBILITY IS TO MAKE MONEY, PERIOD. AN ISP DOES THIS BY GIVING THE BEST EXPERIENCE TO THE GREATEST NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS. PROGRAMS (BITTORRENT, SOULSEEK, WHATEVER) CAN BE LEFT ON AND WILL MAX OUT AVAILABLE BANDWIDTH, HURTING OTHER PEOPLES SPEEDS. SHAW/ROGERS NETWORK WAS BUILT FOR RESIDENTIAL USE. THIS ISN'T RESIDENTIAL USAGE, IF YOU WANT TO BE RUNNING THIS KIND OF TRAFFIC GET A REAL BUSINESS CONNECTION, IT WILL COST A LOT MORE THAN 40 BUCKS A MONTH AND THEY WILL LET YOU USE AS MUCH SOULSEEK AND BITTORRENT AS YOU WANT. THIS IS THERE IS NO NETWORK IN THE WORLD THAT WILL LET YOU CONSTANTLY DEGRADE THE EXPERIENCE OF OTHER USERS, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS FOR SOMETHING AS STUPID AND IMMATERIAL AS "SHARING MP3S AND MOVIES REALLY FAST". DO SOME QUICK MATH IN YOUR HEAD ON HOW MUCH BANDWIDTH WOULD BE NEEDED TO HAVE A SMALL NETWORK OF SAY 10,000 USERS PAYING $50 TO DO A CONSTANT 500KB UP AND DOWN 24/7. HERE'S A HINT, ITS JUST OVER 38 Gbps YOU'D MAKE $500,000 A MONTH, WHICH PAYS FOR MAYBE YOUR STAFF, YOUR COLO RENTALS, AND ABOUT 7 GIG LINKS TO ONE UPSTREAM PROVIDER. YOU NOW NEED TO PULL 31 GIGABITS, ADVERTISING, MORE UPSTREAMS, A COUPLE MIL IN NETWORKING GEAR AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO BRING IT TO EVERYONES CURB. HAVE FUN WITH THAT. KID YOU DON'T HAVE ANY GRASP OF THE REALITIES OF BUSINESS OR RUNNING A NETWORK, YOU JUST LIKE TO DOWNLOAD MP3S AND GOOGLE SHIT. |

Gusto, I agree, yes.
but using Ellacoya was a business decision you see... one of the ways shaw gets subscribers is by touting the speed of their service over dial-up. marketing an ‘unlimited’ service should be that - unlimited... instead of wasting money for Ellacoya they should invest it where it's needed...for a better network and more bandwith...that's the way lots of other ISPs do it. but taking away free choice from the customers is the worst they can do. also, how do you think Shaw will handle new technologies such as hdtv, iptv, video on demand? with Ellacoya? lol, gimme a break... also, all this will backfire...if they can shape traffic like this it obviously means that they can see what is going through their network. so how can they disclaim any liability for the transferred content in the future? in the end, all this will just hurt them and their business... IF THE CLAIM WAS 'TAKE DOWN A HOME-HOSTED WEBSITE GIVING OUT ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ISOS' OR 'HEY SUP LOOKS LIKE THIS GUY IS TRADING CHILD PORN ON KAZAA' THEN THE NETWORK IS REQUIRED TO KILL THAT ACCESS. SERIOUSLY GUY LESS GOOGLE MORE REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE. |

To come to an end here: She's on Telus now!
Both her uploads and downloads work great and she gets the promised speed. So that's the final answer - yes, it was Shaw that cut her COMPLETELY off from uploading and she couldn't do anything about it but change her ISP. (nothing in her set-up changed except the modem, obviously) This is a prime example of how not to treat a customer... And now I'm done with all this! *moves on* :) Last edited by anewlife; Jan 24, 07 at 05:34 AM. |
