If it's a local DJ and I've paid $5 cover for the club that night, they can do whatever they want
But if I'm paying upwards of $25 I want a solid set from everyone. Mind you, the more I drink, the more like gibberish it all sounds like anyway. |

auto-transform on an efx = flaring. I would think innovation would entail making sounds that you can't do without the technology. Sure he does some pretty neat stuff with the EFX but his little auto-transform "scratch" isn't one of them. Last edited by dj_soo; Apr 24, 07 at 07:23 PM. |

yeah sure he uses an auto-transform, but he isn't some old school mash-up, turntablist DJ. He's not trying to be. He creates a multitude of new sounds with his EFX/CDJ combo that can't be created with traditional methods/equipment....and probably shouldnt even be compared to them.
do you actually think james zabiela has never scratched with a record, or doesn't know how to use a crossfader? c'mon....he's doin his own thing |
|

actually, i should correct myself. it's not really zabiela that i think is an asshat, it's people who believe he's "an amazing DJ" simply because they don't know just how little effort it takes to do what he does.
here's my proof (and remember, this is before the release of the 800 mixer which now automatically syncs the effects like the auto-transform to the music): YouTube - James Zabiela Pioneer CDJ-1000 Mk.II Promo any remotely good dj can do what he does with a small amount of practice. |

ha....yeah....."little effort" ....i think he deserves a little more credit than that
and of course lots of people could do what he does....but the fact is they dont....he's developed a pretty unique style, whether it's difficult or not.......and obviously anyone could do some of that shit with practice.....the same goes for anything it doesn't take much effort to beatmatch a couple of tracks either.....i guess every DJ is an asshat |

yeah, pretty much. but my point is that he's not ground breaking in his technical ability or sound aesthetic and he's no where near as "amazing" as a lot of people think he is, which is how he's marketed. he's got some tricks curtesy of pioneer electronics (that i believe he helped develop) and he would be pretty much nothing without them. or rather, he would probably be another flash in the pan DJ playing instantly dated tracks.
and as far as "little effort", maybe you should try out some of the effects he uses and you'll find out how easy it is. you can do some simple and very easy re-edits with the pioneer 500 with no experience on the mixer at all. gets kind of boring pretty fast though. imo. |

nice try.
i think he's crap because i don't like his music (i find it intensely boring) and he's seemingly trying to fool the world that he's doing something technically innovative, which is a load of shit. hence i think he's an asshat and that the unfortunate people ignorant of how much the machine does and are too lazy/willfully don't care to find out are asshats too. just like the ones that think that nickleback is a good band or that jerry bruckheimer makes good movies/TV shows. |

you have to remember that this is a scene where djs that do fuck-all behind the decks (i.e. oakenfold) are lauded as godly djs.
in that respect I actually think zabiela at least is doing *something* when he performs (unlike a lot of "superstar djs" out there in the EDM scene) - can't say i like his music tho. The thing about the scratching is that people give him props for doing shit that you don't need an fx box to do - all you need is good technique (ok, flaring is fucking hard - i can't do it) and practice yet people are calling him some kind of prodigious genius just cause he figured out a shortcut to make something easier. If that's the case, might as well just use Torq and utilize the auto-beatmatching feature or sit there and trigger loops on ableton and be lauded as an untouchable dj. Anyway, I think that zabiela has some cool tricks up his sleeve - i've learned some stuff that my efx-500 can do from watching his videos but none of that stuff is that hard to do and I still think his "scratching" is pretty bunk. |
