DJ's are definitely entertainers and performers. The DJ's mood should match that of the crowd. When I see a DJ hopping around because he's really into his music it makes me have more fun.
However, if he's hammered and his set is hard on the ears and if he's losing his grip on the crowd- yank him. You gotta save the party or people will just leave. But it's hard to play at a club and not have a couple of drinks. I also think you have to consider the atmosphere. If you're at a party surrounded by music die hards you'd better keep your shit together. otherwise you'll have hundreds of people standing with their arms crossed tapping their toes to a different beat waiting for you to get off and for the other dj to come and save the day. Nothing feels worse than clearing a room. |

Worse than you yourself being fucked is some other fucking DJ dude who`s trashed who wants to `show you his skills,` behind the decks during your set. I`ve had people just come behind the decks and are like `hand me a record.` Then they either really fuck it up; one drunk asshole wasn`t looking and out a massive scratch across my brand new copy of Aphex`s Windowlicker. Another time, guy (Nick Wilson) got behind the decks and started doing fader cuts and kills every 5 seconds, then trainwrecked. I can handle a few beers when I DJ, but these guys are smashed and need to fuck off.

Somehow, these guys just infiltrate the decks. I don`t mind requests or even if someone brings there own tunes, but these guys claim to be experts and want to prove it. Sometimes they wait until I take a bathroom/smoke break and when I come back they`re all over the decks. Recently, I was playing with my roommate Alan and he was having some trouble so he asked for my help. These other 2 DJ guys moved in before I could rescue him with a lot of ` we got it, no worries.` They went on to mix the most minimal 4/4 track with a bumping electro/house club track. It was like throwing water on a burning flame. I can`t be the only one this happens to. I remember once I was supposed to play at Red Room and the Dj`s were such pricks they wouldn`t allow me my time slot. I started Dj`n to enjoy music and spread the good vibe. #1 reason why I don`t actively pursue decks in Vancouver.
