In your example you said someone who knows a doctor (which is a reference to you having a friend who was/is a member of a union)

If we are using that metaphor, since I was a memeber of a union, then I am at the same level as your friend IE-doctor.

How can you, a writer, fuck up your own metaphor?

That's exactly what that means.

I spent my entire underage life living with a Doctor, and have scored rather well on biology exams at various levels (including post-secondary). I am by no means a medical expert.

What's worse? Someone who admittedly knows nothing about medicine, or someone without proper qualifications claiming that they know medicine? One seems benign except for the purposes of argument, and the other seems dangerous.

PS: Doctors aren't unionized. They're accredited. There is a world of difference between the two.

There's also a world of difference between pointing out the err of your ways and making ad hominem attacks. You are doing one and Ninjaboy is doing the other. Guess which is which!

As for being an expert - you're right, and very often I do spout my opinions on health matters. But if a doctor with an MD were to come on here and tell me that I don't know wtf I'm talking about, I wouldn't go on a tear about how I know more about it than he does from my secondhanded understanding of health science.

A) He is doing the attacks. I just made a statement, then he attacked my credibility, which has nothing to do with the topic. Therefore, he's attacking.

B) Right, except Ninjaballs only went to a couple classes of med school. He was in a union. Big woop. He didn't run or form a union, so he knows as much as I do. All he did was pay dues.

Not necessarily, no. But unions in this day and age seem like Rytalin - OVERPERSCRIBED. Wayyyy too many jobs that are unionized that really don't need to be. Don't want to work minimum wage? THEN GET A FREAKING BETTER JOB! Unions far too often cater to the lowest common denominator of the workforce (i.e. the slackers) and all that really happens is the very good employees get knocked down because the union means they're lumped together with the idiots that will do just enough work to avoid getting fired and slack off for the rest of the day.

Um, yeah. Okay. Except I've been in two unions now and both times I thought all the union reps were kinda political tools who rarely really cared about the employee rights, more just about the union's political position. So I trust your friend's opinion that much less.

I agree, in some cases Unions are needed. But making the broad statement, all fields should be unionized is a little much.

For example. Mangle said he wants tom lee (where he works) to unionize. In most cases, Tom Lee hires strictly part time employees with a few full time employees.

A union in a workplace that is:
A: Retail
B: Mostly Part time
C: Minimum wage

In my opinion is a little silly.

Actually - and I obviously more about it that you will ever have a right to pretend to guess about because I work there (according to your logic) - part timers are a rarity at Tom Lee. Maybe one in 15 people there are part time, if that. There are no feasible benefits to speak of ($100 a month for medical after a year? Yeah right), the base salary for our sales staff hasn't been raised in over 10 years now, and there's no plan to raise it any time soon, no bonuses, and the best discount you can expect is cost plus 10, so no one who works there can afford to buy anything. It's not minimum wage, because it's $10 an hour salary, but, basically, aside from the retail part, you are wrong across the board. I hear they're trying to raise minimum wage to $10, though, so you might be right about something in a couple years. Management sure does get their fair share of raises and perks, though. Goody for them. They couldn't give a rat's ass what we have to say about anything. It's a Hong Kong owned business that runs on Hong Kong practices.

Why do you work there then? You obviously hate it. I know several unionized wharehouses looking to hire if you want.

$10 an hour for a large retail chain is pretty good! And cost plus 10% is an amazing discount.

That's $10 without the possibility of a raise and cost +10 after a year (and our margins are usually +20, so it ain't much). You get nothing for the first year. No one gets any free gear and even software is stingy as hell. That may fly in Kamloops, but with rent the way it is in Van, that's not a living wage. God forbid you need a dentist or actually want to make music.

Why do you expect them to take a loss providing you instruements, and why do you expect them to give you anything for free?

I agree with you on the $10 wage with no raise point though, only a fucking moron would stay at a job for that...

That part's not really Tom Lee's fault. It's our stingy ass distributors. Back in the day, they used to give you free sh!t all the time. I mean, if you use it, you're likely to sell it. Now, I don't even know what half this crap is.
I've got a buddy who works in the Ski/Snowboard industry, though, and reps are always giving him iPods, free skis, taking him on driking trip to test out new gear, sh!t like that.
That doesn't really have anything to do with unions, though. That's just me bitching. Well, that and the Tom Lee mission statement is "we want to bring music making to the community" but they really just want to make money selling garbage to morons. No class. They're making us wear monkey bowling shirt now too, so no more individuality.

I honnestly think you are expecting way too much from working at a large retail chain.

Yeah, in some work places you get free stuff. I myself get a lot of free stuff through my job. But it's not expected. And it's a lot to expect a free guitar or amp. Just cause. And besides, Tom lee doesn't sell a large variety of brands, so there isn't as much of a chance to steer customers from one brand to another. In most departments (speaking from my experience as a shopper), there is the cheap brand (berhinger, numark, maudio...) and the good brand (fender, Mackie, Technics...) without any in between.

Tom Lee is a large retailer. They can survive by moving a large volume of equipment. Customers come there based on the recognized name, and not nessesarily because of a knowledgeable diverse staff (although they do expect that). As such, tom lee will concentrate on moving a lot of equipment and their house brands (MRW) because of a higher profit.

As for thanking me for being civil. You're welcome, although I did imply that you were a "fucking moron".

Last year tim hortons in these parts was hiring 16$/hour for nightshift, save on was hiring for 13$/hour.

It blows me away, the concentration of people living in the city, unwilling to commute or live in the surrounding, but equally beautiful province.

They don't call it Gods land for a reason.
