Complaining about the rain in Vancouver
In light of the recent weather happenings in Vancouver, I feel it appropriate to comment.
I've heard enough elevator, coffee shop, yoga studio change room, bus, skytrain, and restaurant small talk about it. I've seen enough facebook status updates that say things like 'OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S LIKE THIS IN JUNE' and 'WHAT HAPPENED TO SUMMER' Please consider the following: i) You live in Vancouver. It rains here, a lot. Before all the Starbucks, Concord Pacific Condos, and Salad Loops came in most of the land here was covered in coastal rainforest. Why do they call it a rainforest? Anyways, if you're new here, then you've learned a great deal about your new home and hopefully you will come to accept the fact that you live in a rainy place! If you live here and know this, then I wish to inform you that no amount of complaining will somehow cause these weather systems to defer further to the north. Infact, no amount of bitching has the power to change weather systems. Get a cute umbrella instead. ii) I know this might come as a shock to everyone, but the first day of Summer is not until June 21. Asking where Summer has gone before it has begun seems really strange to me. iii) Everyone who has been around for awhile can probably remember that in BC, that the weather doesn't get warm and sunny for long stretches until late July or early August. I can think of a lot of track meets and sports days back in my day that were rained out. This is not an anomaly, this is normal. And before someone makes the stupidly obvious (and equally unfunny) post about how ironic it is I am complaining about complainers, I respectfully request you decline and instead focus your energy on doing your part to stop complaining about the rain. |

sometimes on sunday morning I wake up extra early and get of bed to peer through the blinds. No one knows this but I hope for the rain. This is partly because I have a kick ass garden (no homo) that needs rain and videogames are way better when its pouring.

No, wait, Summer didn't come until at least the 2nd week of August last year and ended promptly in the middle of September. IMO, Vancouver Spring weather has sucked for the last two years. In 2006, I came back from a month in Cancun at the end of March, and wore flip flops and shorts to work on Robson Street all the way through September. Spring 07 and 08 have apparently been the coldest on record for a long time - remember how it snowed at the end of April? What the hell was THAT about? Anyway, the never-ending cold and rain gets really depressing and annoying. I understand why people bitch about it because I'm one of them :P |

longest day of the year less than two weeks away, we're about 20 minutes from the sun being at its highest in the sky, and it's dark enough right now for it to be a few minutes after sunset.
Booooooo. I'm used to bad years, but usually they're followed by a hot year. This is supposed to be our hot year. Yeah, this is bad, even for Vancouver. |

im with mat, i have a kickass garden too (no homo not needed) and i just planted some new liliac shrubs and some new perrenials and they are thirsty. so its all good....
and i just planted hydrangeas and put alluminum sulphate in the soil to adjust the ph to make the bloom blue so it needs this wonderful rain to drain and well...hydrate' the 'hydrangeas so long as it stops raining on saturday then thats good. Last edited by Revolver; Jun 09, 08 at 02:29 PM. |
