I've never used ear buds when spinning, but I've thought about it. I had the 'Skull Candy Full Metal Jackets', they were amazing and I had thought I could probably have used them to spin.
But I don't like having to pull them in and out of my ear, which is why I will stick to normal style headphones.
You can use ear buds, but you have to think of how much ease it would be to use them.

proper in ear headphones have better outside sound attenuation then closed cup. i have some sennheiser in ear headphones that i'm starting to use for gigs. they sound a million times better than any sonys i've used. (skullcandy sounds like ass from what i've heard (the TIs)). in ear are good for mixing straight off the board which can give you tighter mixes. i always bring some closed cup headphones if the monitors suck or the booth is too close to the mains. in ear monitoring is used a lot for concerts as well.

whatever works though.

if you're going to use buds, make sure you go pro - not the the consumer stuff. Get some Shure buds or some Etymotics.

^Yeah the sures are pretty sweet. I'm not sold on using earbuds for djing though. I like the fact that you can take the closed cups on/off pretty easy. If I was in a band it would be a different story.

my style of DJing is conducive to buds. a lot of people feel the need to use the stage monitors.

it's weird that the etymotics only go up to 16K.

depends on how yo like to dj - i like to "telephone" a lot and prefer taking my headphones off and listening to the main mix on the monitors.

Some people prefer to mix in headphones, use split cue, or leave on phone on the ear and use the volume control - these styles of djing probably work better for using earbuds.
