I disagree
if you can truely rock a crowd and keep their attention through the whole set then you're a good musician as a dj Anyone can spin records and play with the crossfader, and anyone can blow on a horn, anyone can push keys on a piano but if you blend tracks togethor so perfectly that you don't lose interest of the crowd then I think you're a musician Records being the instrument |

Someone might know how to play the guitar, but still suck and sound like a cat being killed. not too many djs can really rock it...those that do SHOULD be labeled a musician. |

I still think that in order to be a musician you need to have an intimate understanding of musical theory and a thorough knowledge of how the sounds are created.
A DJ that's fucking awesome and rocking a party isn't necessarily a musician, he's just a great performer; an artist. This isn't taking anything away from DJs, and many DJs are indeed musicians too, but solely for other factors and not their DJ'ing ability. I mean seriously now, I'm sure you've all met DJs that no one in their right mind would ever classify as musicians. They may still be good DJs and rock the crowd, but that has nothing to do with their knowledge of music. I mean I'm sorry, but if someone can't draw out a fucking C major scale for me, or tell me the difference between a major and minor scale, then they have no business associating themselves with musicians. |

why does a DJ have to be called a musician anyways? it doesn't mean we're lesser artists, it's just a different thing. As a DJ i don't care if i'm not considered a musician, i know i can do what i do well and that's good enough for me. I've played musical instruments in the past and been trained in music theory, trust me it's a completely different thing.
and i don't agree with DJs being considered musicians because they can rock a party - i've heard DJs who couldn't match a beat to save their lives totally light it up, as well i've heard technically amazing DJs bore their crowd to tears. The same goes for musicians. Rocking a crowd is more about intuition than skill. |

blah i'm still standing on the point that the best djs are the ones who use the musician inside them to make a set outstanding and capture an audience with real musical soul.
i've seen alotta djs and the ones who stood out definetly had a stong musical mind and threw it down on the 1s n 2s. but its rare... lotta djs do it cuz they think being up there is gonna get them rockstar pussy.... haha bullshit more like embarassment |

I'd love to do some dnb tracks with live cello, although it would be quite challenging to mix it in a way that wouldn't lose all the nuances of the instrument... |

i can play the cello just improvising its the same concept
i'm just not used to reading bassclef like treble but yeah the cello makes some great sounds.. really beautiful... yoyoma did a sweet peice with bobby mcferrin on the hummer playing bachs air... forget the number of the suite but its great.... |

I'm surprised how long this topic's been going!
I agree with the notion that a DJ can be a musician, but not solely based on his/her DJing, which is just playing records in a way that they are beatmatched and run together properly, which anybody can do if they want to... a DJ who also produces music of his/her own is definately a musician though... I doubt anybody on this site can debate that without feeling like a retard for doing it, haha it doesn't take a lot of knowledge to mix records in a basic way... it DOES take a lot of knowledge to mix records so flawlessly that u can't tell where the mix point was, but that's more of a knowledge of how sounds work together than a knowedge of how to MAKE music I think that's about all I got for now... |
