honestly, i agree with you...
my reason being: that Dj's are just taking something produced(inevitably meaning created) by someone else, mixing it with another track by another artist and calling it his own. Dj's are not musicians, they are creative artists... you have the inventor.. who created the original idea, then you have an innovator.. who takes something that is already invented and makes it better. Dj's are muscial innovators. Good Dj's are hard to find, but a dime a dozen, a good producer/masterer is extremly rare to find. hence my point... djs are not musicians. if i took motzarts 5th symphony and mixed it with some drums and snares... does that make me a musician, no. makes me an innovator. |

what do you define as a musician? someone who can play a musical instrument like the piano?
maybe yeah sure but think about it this way, someone can play the piano, violin, guitar the way their teachers trained them to do so but have no musical input what so ever, just technicality. and yeah djs play other peoples music, but a set is made by the dj. some djs just put together their newest tracks, or throw down party rockers to get the place moving, but some also put in their musical side of thing and mix and arrange the music in a way that a distinct sound and flow can emerge. just like an instrument with nerdy fucks with parents forcing them to play the piano like a robot, many djs can either have a technical side or a musical side. |

DJ's aren't musicians unless they get all crazy with their cutting until their records turn into their own original music
Turntablists however, ARE musicians It's just like a band or a producer who uses samples of other peoples' music to make new music... Turntables use samples off records to make their own brand of music out of em! |

To be a good DJ, you have to have a good knowledge of what sounds good, and what types of music go well into other types.
So does a musician. The difference is, a musician needs to know HOW to make those good sounds, and then to train himself to make them on an instrument. A DJ just needs to listen to lots of music and learn how operate turntables and a mixer. |

i dunno.....i've been playin' guitar since i was 12
i know what a musician is...... Yes, if a dj is some crazy dmc pro.......yes def. a musician. But i dunno.....i've been spinning records fer like 4 yrs, and i can't say i've fully started producing yet, but when it comes to spinning records i do believe that people with a musical background will have a much better idea of how it work, ie structure, bars, timing etc. But sometimes spinning seems more like a video game. :c-tard: -jeff- oh yeah....and check this out...... |

I think that depends on your definition of Musician. Your average DJ that plays for 500 people on a regular basis most likely isn't as skilled as your average violinist that plays for 500 people on a weekly basis; THAT I'll agree with.

In addition, just like a cover artist, a good DJ can learn to improvise within a set (layering tracks to create new songs; additional looping and scratching techniques; etc). And, just because it needed re-viewing... :c-tard: |

Essentially what you're saying is that the only musicians are composers, which I think your average member of an orchestra will thoroughly disagree with. |
