While I would never doubt that a lot of the most influential/good albums came out a long time ago, one thing I love about rap/hip hop music is that stuff coming out even nowadays continues to impress me- this has never happened with any other genre of music I've been into (punk, dnb). I'm not going to deny that lately, there's been a lot of really mediocre overrated acts making it huge (*cough* gunit), but I still like that this music continues to intrigue me with stuff coming out in the last few years.
We could even get into the argument on what exactly is considered 'oldschool' . This is a board full of people who call plaza of nations parties that happened a whole two years ago 'oldschool'. haha |

i totally agree.
i find alot of older hiphop, especially the stuff coming out between the mid 80's and early 90's, to be completely one-dimensional and boring. it's good to show respect for the old school stuff but at the same time hiphop has evolved so much, and if you ask me, is 100 times better than what it was a couple decades ago. |

I wouldn't call oldskool rap 'boring' or 'one dimensional' I just think that this particular genre is consistently putting out good music, which is a good thing. I think a lot of oldskool albums are certainly extremely influential, but I think when you're going for a 'best of' list, you can add so much from the old and the new, is all.

But what a love most about those guys is they mix all my favorite stuff together. On any NinjaTune compilation you will find jazz, drum and bass, turntablism and hip-hop. There is also a certain elegance in each track that is really hard to put my finger on. Ninjatunes = really emotional, layered, thougthful, inspiring, beautiful music! |

I really like Amon Tobin and Funki Porcini a lot too.
And they're not Ninjatune, but Nightmares on Wax for the whole AcidJazz sound Ninjatune tackles so nicely.... And if you like Pharcyde's Passing Me By, check out Nights Interlude from the album Smoker's Delight.... play spot the sample. =) |

I'll check it out after this track (WE WANT YOUR SOUL!) finishes. It's in my playlist, but I don't know it by name yet....
edit: While we're on the topic, I'm going to mention Amon Tobin's Supermodified. Oh. And Z-Trip's Demo CD. Specially that Tool/Outkast mashup. Or playing 2 45s of Billie Jean, keeping it to just the bassline and tune with Rage's Testify being rapped overtop of it. Fucking glorious man. I don't care what anybody says, a studio recording will NEVER do a live set justice. Freeland drops a Nirvana remix in his set, right? Z-Trip says fuck it and drops Nirvana. Fuck. I'm gonna go listen to that right now. Last edited by ebbomega; Dec 08, 04 at 02:16 PM. |
