I dont listen to rock at all anymore unless it's the doors, jimi, pink floyd, queen..... stuff along those lines.... I like more complicated music like jazz for instance!!

But to contribute, check out a fairly new group called..... The Rebirth, a very funky group they are... they're definitely on the motown tip!! Here's the link to their myspace account.

http://www.myspace.com/therebirth

Evil vibrations is a wicked track!! Play it at your next house party =) or your next BBQ!!!

Modest Mouse - Dramamine.
Primus - Tommy The Cat (Especially their live version with the ridiculously awesome drum solo from the Rhinoplasty album.... Keep note, the same guy doing that crazy scatting is the guy doing the crazy slap bass alongside)
Tool - Sober

Tell me that's not complicated.

You are right!!! I happen to love primus... they are musical geniuses, nothing like 'em. But I was talking in percentage and I was also just stating my personal opinion.. Primus is one in a million, MOST rock bands that are out today have basic training in the theory side of music and dont usually educate themselves further... I know people are going to hate on me for this but it is the truth.... If you listen most rock songs are composed with your average and basic ABC chord changes (very predictable). I, myself am bored with easy made music, so that's why I like and listen to jazz music... In jazz you never know what chord change is around the corner, and to me that is what complicated music is all about. Not that they would want to, but well trained Jazz musicians could probably conquer and play any type of music if they really wanted to (and I'm talking with instruments and vocals).. because they learn all the sides of theory and not just the basics.. but you will find very very very few rock stars that are able to compose a jazz peice, but then again there is a reason why they are doing rock in the first place and so they probably wouldn't want to write jazz music for that matter... I'm not hating on rock music.. but I only really like the stuff that is well thought out in terms of theory.

While what you say may be true you're missing out one important element of music..... enjoyment and nothing more. Granted that a lot of it may not be complicated but did it ever cross your mind that the intent is not to make you think but make you move?

I have hundreds of bands I listen to crossing all genres of music. While I enjoy the stuff that is musically complicated it doesn't stop me from bopping my head to some silly Top 40 radio tune if it's got a catchy beat. Being a music snob doesn't make you better, it makes you miss out on something that is meant to be nothing more than a simple pleasure. :)

For one I am definetely not a music snob... VERY far from it... but I am a musician and I have to pick apart songs and analize them because otherwise I wouldn't learn how to compose a song. I can't relate to most rock and pop stars because I dont make easy music. I can't appreciate music that is being taken advantage of by the actual artists themselves.. too much of a good thing can get old pretty fast. The rap or bling bling crap I can compare to Glam rock and look what happened to that!!! All these green day wannabe bands like sum 41, and good charlotte.. seriously do these guys think they can achieve making this type of music forever and still have people liking their music throgh the whole journey?? True musicians that really love music and that dont use it as a ploy to get girls and what not always think about the longevity of their career. The only pop stars I know of that has made their career last is Madonna, and Michael. But you do see musicians like earth wind and fire, parliment, elton john, aretha franklin, billy holiday, ella fitzgerlad, miles davis, john coltrane, stevie wonder, ray charles and so on who still get recognised today because they're music is intellignet, and they took the time to make it real good. How many of the semi - new bands and pop stars other than Metalica and Nirvana, do you think are going to go down in history??? I can appreaciate bands like Tool, Perfect Circle, Pantera, Sublime, stuff like that because it's different and unique, but please gimme a break with all this new already been done music that is comming out.

If you listen there is so much music out there that has a jazz influence. For example, all your Q -tip songs, bossa, bossa dnb, soul, funk, P FUNK, house, disco, broken beat ( < not breaks), nu jazz, nu soul, acid jazz, I could go on and on. Some stars I do like however are Beyonce, Amerie, Ben Harper, The Roots, Q-tip, Erycah Badu, Mos Def... and some others... and the reason I like these artists is because they take their music seriously and not as a ploy to achieve girls and millions of dollars like your typical man 50 bloody cent. But like I said before this is just my personal opinion... so please dont take this to heart if you are a big fan of new age alternative music or top 40. I'm a lover of jazz in all its forms and I know we wont see eye to eye. But that's how life goes.

I dont think the number of posts I have should matter and you shouldn't say web career you should say fnk career!! You asked for a civilized argument by calling me a music snob and so you got one.. so I wouldn't start complaining!! Besides if we were having this conversation in person I dont think you'd be annoyed by me, its simply a conversation written in text.... If we were seated down at a coffee shop having this dicussion it would come acorss very different than by reading it. People are allowed to debate you know!! It's normal! And people are allowed to have different opinions which I stated from the very beginning. I could see you being annoyed with me if I shot down all forms of alternative music because then that would make me a snob.. but I didn't.. I can appreciate all forms of music if its good! So I think you should think before sayng your annoyed by me, because frankly it doesn't happen very often that I annoy people in life. I'm actually a very nice down to earth girl so what you say puzzles me.

EbboDave's rule of people #523: Everybody is a music snob. Everybody. Heck, I'll listen to anything with the exception of country and I'm still a music snob.

This makes you a music snob. You've already missed the point.

Take punk rock. The idea the ramones and Sex Pistols and to a newer extent Blood Brothers had going was: We're gonna play four or five chords. But we're going to play the shit out of them. And that's exactly what they do.

Quote:

Easy music never is easy. You need to know the rules before you can break them. It's where the rules are broken that interesting music comes out.

I gave you a list of bands and you only mentioned Primus. Check out that Modest Mouse track. Go listen to The Faint. Check out some of the bands people are mentioning here. Stop judging an entire genre based on what you hear on the radio. Nine times out of ten the radio's not playing the best stuff.

Based on what you've written so far, here's some more stuff I think you'll like:

Mogwai
Murder By Death
Failure
A Perfect Circle

If you feel like getting really experimental (as such complicated), here's some Industrial stuff that I think you should check out:
Snog
Wumpscut
Haujobb
Venetian Snares (REALLY experimental, REALLY brilliant)
(Apologies, I know these aren't all bands, but hey, we're working on this here).

There's a sincere problem though.

Sum 41, Blink 182, Good Charlotte.... see, they all suck. Have you noticed anybody in this thread mention them yet?

If you're so down to earth you wouldn't turn down an entire major genre of music simply because you heard bad examples of it on the radio.

Lets see you make good music using only 4 cords! now thats talent!!

Avril is Pop Punk. but anyway, i like what she does, at least someone is out there exposing the rest of the world to individualism and expressism.

Dear fucking lord.

If an artist isn't exposing the world to individualism and expression they're not being an artist.

There are people doing a much better job than Avril. All she's doing is riding cultural stereotypes and calling it "expression".

You offended nobody.

Just the internet. Takes a lot more than just being oblivious to offend me.

And like I said, check out what a lot of the people here are putting up. Most of the bands being listed in this thread are really good.
