- to everyone P.O.'ed at the "powers-that-be" for causing this and that want to write a letter to the appropriate governmental department/authority, first off do it rather than just wanting to do it; secondly, when the time comes around (if you are of age), vote! Even though there likely won't be a "pro-rave" candidate, regardless of the level of government, some candidates and/or parties are bigger believers in regulations, red tape, and closing things down than others. And it appears that what happened here was, more than anything, a result of the arbitrary application of regulations. Essentially someone "up there" just changed their mind. Even if you are under 18, you can be informed and try to influence the votes of your parents, friends over 18, etc.
- I think what happened here was shitty and by no means Twisted's fault, at least not directly. They started off trying to accomplish something, a large-scale, reasonably central party featuring world-class talent. This meant what would likely be a new venue, or giving up the "reasonably central" part. I personally might question tackling the challenges of new venues with a party with a reputation and following like Spooky, but at the end of the day it ain't my company. I'm sure everyone's week at Twisted would have been a lot better if this hadn't happened and they've all got more grey hairs this week then all of last year trying to do their best.
- That said, people need to realize that for those under 19, this show was effectively cancelled. With it happening under a week before Oct. 30th, Doom's Night ticket prices were climbing faster than Bre-X mining shares. And now 15/16/17/18 year olds who in some cases likely put in a lot to get the money for a Spooky ticket, have to pay a second time and be out money they don't have for what looks like about a month (Nov.15 + 1 week to process + 1 week mailing?). These aren't people with credit cards and lines of credit, but often people working after school jobs for shit money.
- It may be "just a party", but as Kraig has said, "Spooky Is Halloween" ... honestly, I think Halloween and New Year's are the two biggest party nights of the year, and under 19s just had the rug pulled out from under them. Lets see how you feel if you show up on Saturday to find them already at capacity, cops won't let anyone else in, but you are still promised a refund within a few weeks. (I'm by no means wishing or implying that this will happen, just trying to turn the tables of thought for a moment.)
- Personally, I'm less than happy. I chose Spooky over Doom's Night because the line ups were of similar quality given my own preferences, Spooky was within walking distance (no cab fare or sketchy drives/parking BS/etc), and it seemed as though most of my friends would be there. Now its fewer performers, shorter duration, most friends are going to Doom's (my work schedule this week caused me to learn of events only Thursday with no real time to start chasing tickets, esp. given their prices and the potential for frauds if I don't know the seller), at a 2 rooom venue, one room being Plush (which I detest and could burn to the ground -on Sunday!- and I wouldn't shed a tear) coupled with drunks, drink lineups and (since nothing to the contrary has been posted) drink prices set somewhere between gouging and exhorborant, and no refund forthcoming as I bought my ticket for $50 and it has been mentioned by Kraig that those who paid $55 and up would be given partial refunds (despite the fact that same tix are now $35). I'm trying to stay positive since I am looking forward to Lisa Lashes, and I suppose it may give me the chance to meet new peeps, etc, but it ain't easy. I suspect that I will be disappointed when I compare the night to what Spooky could have been or to what Doom's night would have been had I gone, but I'm hopeful that my time will be good enough that such thoughts don't occupy too much mental energy.
I'd say that's my 2 cents worth, but really it seems more like a buck seventy five...
