^ india gate gave me overcooked basmati rice and i've never been back. their food was sub-par.

if you want really, really good indian food. go to taste of punjab in surrey. not joking.

speaking of indian food. is there anywhere in this city to get some decent somosas that weren't made by dingy commercial drive hippies for a resonable price?

somosas in surrey are the best i've had and cheap too. 2 for $2 and made by the humblest indian ladies on the planet.

greek: calypso or stephos (west end)
italian: cafe de medici (robson)
stir fry: noodle box (4th ave)
sushi: shabusen or kamei royale (downtown)
mexican: margaritas (4th ave) salmon & black bean burritos are the bomb!

Breakfast = Joe's Grill on Davie

Lunch / Brunch = Glowbal in Yaletown (have a cheaper brunch menu that is damn tasty... try the potato gnocchi with smoked chicken... DAMN TASTY and $12!)

Dinner... hmmmmm... lots of good places.

Shabusen has really subpar fish and sushi. I know everyone loves the novelty of it and always goes there, but come on lets get real here haha. Kaidesushi(.com) right near my building has really fresh sashimi all the time.

Flux Bistro in Gastown (where our New Years party was)

the food is incredible and very affordable. Best beef I've ever eaten (braised short ribs)
and drinks are quite cheap (double greygoose $ 8 )

Carlos, I think you should stick to your kits sources.

Stephos isn't all that great, I'll order some pick up there in a pinch if I'm tight for time.

Shabusen is pretty subpar, I'd much prefer higher quality fish to all you can eat stuff.

My suggestions would be...

sushi or izakaya: Shiru Bay, Hapa Izakaya, Guu, Kadoya or Kitto.

italian: cin cin and I've heard good things about Italian Kitchen.

steak: morton's, no where else even compares.

nothwest: Raincity Grill, Parkside, C, Aqua Riva or The Fish House.

omg the cannery is so good. yay for work lunches there.

Some casual restaurants that I like.. nothing fancy, just your day to day restaurants (within vancouver):

Italian- cafe luxy on davie, cincin has a mighty hazelnut creme brulee
Best burger- the bacon chedder burg at earls (paramount earl's food somehow just tastes better)
Chinese noodles/congee- The wonton noodle restaurant just on Main and Broadway
Best shanghai- Main and 27th? Yellow awning.
Sushi- Cant go wrong with Samurai on davie.
Izakaya- Guu on Thurlow. yum
Local Pho- Broadway and Kingsway Pho Thai Son
Dimsum- Floata in China Town. (not the best, but its fast, decent food, and free parking)
Best Sandwich- La Grotta on Commercial, also the baked brie ciabatta at earls is my fave sandwich.
Best Salsa- Las Margarita on West 4th.
Best Mussels- Stellas on Commercial. (They have a really good beef carpaccio too)
Best Mexican- Still to be found.
Drinks- Robson Earls.. opens til 2, kitchen opens til 1, Section 3, Stellas.
Overall best food- comes from my kitchen :)

yeah i agree on the whole shabusen thing. just an easy go to get everyone together and central location. and non-sushi lovers enjoy the korean bbq! but i've had MUCH better sushi in my life! not surprising considering its all-you-can-eat.
