If the service is bad enough (and I'm strictly talking about the server themself, not food or drink wait times or quality) that I have to speak to the manager, I'm sorry. Regardless of the fact that a tip-out may be necessary for the server, I'm not tipping them. They may be having a bad day, but you know what? I work in retail. I have bad days too. I don't take it out on my customers. You have to leave your shit at the door. Why should I pay out of my pocket to get attitude from someone? My opinion on tipping? I'll generally leave 10-15% for the "expected" level of service (depending on server attitude), and more for great service. Just for the record. ;) Last edited by MissBehavior; Jan 14, 08 at 02:03 PM. |

Friends.
Hey, there were times that I didn't tip when I was younger. But then I was a server for a few years. Hardest job I have ever done hands down. The amount of stress from serving is insane. And ever since I have ALWAYS left something for the server. I had a chair thrown at me for cutting someone off, I was blocked in a section and couldn't get out by a huge guy, I was yelled at, had 2 big tables fight each other outside in the parking lot (while they were still my customers), had underage kids sneak booze in and was close to getting blamed for serving them alcohol, had my life threatned for cutting someone off, had loud screaming kids/babies throwing food everywhere, I was snapped at like a dog, clapped at, whistled at, dealt with dine-n-dashes and put up with little snotty bitches that took 'server' to a whole new level. Yet still gave service with as much of a smile as I could. I worked in the kitchen, as a host and as a server. Some of these people are treated like shit. ALWAYS leave them something. :) |

Some of those people treat their customers like shit. That's when they get nothing. It's not really that hard of a concept to grasp if you're a server. "Hey, I want tips tonight, so I won't be a fucking bitch." It's pretty simple!

hmm yeah, while i agree with the sentiment, if you have a shitty job, it's your EMPLOYER'S job to compensate you properly based on that and not necessarily the customer's. That being said, I always tip and try to tip better for better service. If a tip was a manditory charge, it would be part of the charges on the bill. I don't think it's necessarily right to tip someone generously who doesn't even work for them.

You were a server? Then why'd you correct me before saying you weren't. Yes, it sucks. I've had people leave over the bar and try to break a bottle over my head, I've been knocked around in fights, I've had coke heads threaten to hunt me down and kill me. I've had people try to take money out of the till. However, I don't expect a tip when I give shitty service. Which is a terrible attituide to have. |

Chris... She was a server for several years... not anymore tho.. we got her outta there!! :D
For me theres many things that comes with tipping not just service. and if the service licks my balls.. hell ill talk to thier manger and tip the kitchen. I've never been a server.. but I've worked in the kitchen.. and having them broads bark at yeah aint fun...but niether is having us cooks get at them to get the food out the window. Either way tho.. they tipped the kitchen... and when it was good monies.. atleast we know both of us did a good job. Tis a team effort. I dont care if you refer it to front of house and back of house. you all work at the same effin place. -J |

But expecting a tip no matter what is silly. |

Since I started this thread and 5 pages later I guess i'll reply.
I've read all the arguments and I gotta say I'm with you on this NinjaBoy I can care less if the server has to tip out to the kitchen. The server knows that so please try to not be a bitch and offer some service. If you don't then too bad so sad. However, with that said even if I get the worst service in the world i'll generally still leave something. It sure as hell won't be much maybe 5% or less. Or if i'm really not impressed i'll leave them a shit load of pennies, nickels and dimes only |

I agree. If you've provided good service, then it's perfectly acceptable to expect that.
It's like, if you're in the corporate world and you are a below average performer, would you expect a decent year end bonus? Also, a lot of employers provide their workers with incentives that are 100% PERFORMANCE based. You don't perform to the standards, you don't get the bonus. Think of tips as not an entitlement, but a REWARD for a job well done. You don't do a good job, you don't deserve one. |

wow, some of you people are retarded and cheap. i think some people just look for any excuse to not tip.
i've had terrible service, but i've never not tipped! that's fucking insanity and rude. The reason they put an automatice gratuity on large parties is because people are actually thinking to themselves, "ohhh boy there are 15 of us if we all leave a few dollers, it will be a great tip!" and land up leaving less per a person then if they had come as a couple.... I have thought about leaving %10 for bad service but i've never actually had the gull to do it. I'm sorry guys but a %10 tip is just cheap for service, 15 is standard and if they are great then give them 20 or more. i get the feeling that people who dont tip right learned it from somewhere, i've got family in toronto and they are all cheap. cheap parents raise cheap kids imo |
