why on earth would we need security checks to ride a bus? this is a completely isolated incidence. were decapitation a common event on public buses I might consider security checks, but it's not.

crime rates are at some of the lowest rates right now that we have ever enjoyed in history. so take a deep breath and enjoy the security that we all share.

some people are blowing this way out of proportion, the guy only killed one person. what are the real implications? sadly people get murdered all the time, but unless you can stop every human being from being within the distance of a knife stabbing motion (roughly 3 feet?), there will always be mentally unstable potential murderers around. and guess what, they're probably crazy poor, so you'll see them on the skytrain, on the buses, posting on fnk, and in the mall. Until nutjobs figure out a way to comandeer a Tuesday night movie theatre into the side of a building, I think society will remain relatively safe.

actually yes it is. for three main reasons, first because of the cost, second because it's ineffective, and third because it's an erosion of our freedom. cost wise metal detectors are expensive and so are security guards to operate them. with travel costs already soaring due to fuel costs do you really want to add another major expense? then you have to consider that a security guard with a metal detector wand really isn't going to stop a psychotic person hell bent on killing people. for example what if a person approached a bus, shot the security guard, and then opened fire on the rest of the passengers? or better yet what if a suicide bomber blew them selves up right as they were about to board a bus in crowded line waiting for a security check? and while goddessa and such are definitely alarmists on the slightly crazy side of the spectrum she is right about the erosion of our freedoms. maybe we should have security checks for grocery stores, restaurants, and movie theaters? or maybe not because that would severely limit our freedom and really offer no benefits.

unfortunately in any type of society bad shit happens but if we let that determine the way we live than clearly we will all be worse off on a daily basis. or as Ben Franklin said "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."
