Yup. Aged whiskey generally tastes better, but doesn't have the same kick a warm bottle of JD straight from the BCL offers.

i have strong opinions and i like to express them emphatically. in complex subjects like this i think people misunderstand me because they hear things that remind them of something or someone else and assume i'm making the same argument. like the dawkins comparison (i've never read dawkins and i don't plan to. i don't think he has any insights that would intrigue me). most of my opinions have been formed over a long period of time. this is a subject i've thought about and have discussed at great length for many many years with a very wide range of people. so you're not going to get very far thinking i just read the god delusion and am just now arguing dawkin's point but thinking they're my own.
people who believe in contemporary religions and especially the abrahamic religions blow my mind. the nonsense contained within them seems so self evident to me. but i'll say this again (hopefully more explicitly): i think people can believe whatever they want but beliefs can/should/need to be challenged/explored. my end goal isn't necessarily to change minds but to directly challenge the ideas. and in return i want my ideas challenged. isn't that the point of philosophical discussions? to hone your ideas? you can't do that when everyone pussyfoots around religious belief, imo. besides, if what is believed is true then there's nothing to worry about. i can understand why you and others view me as a dick but i would suggest arguing my points and not my attitude. i'm more interested in that. i'm in this discussion because i want to be. i want to see some arguments i haven't seen before and i want my ideas challenged as much as i want to challenge other's. i'm not nearly as dogmatic as i seem. now that we've had a chance to meet each other and hug, can we go back to busting some balls? |

I'm not religious but I do believe in love
I debated a guy who said love was foolish sometimes you just have to believe in things because to live a life without any belief other than life is shit would be pretty depressing I mean, i've noticed that a lot of religious people are generally happy and I think its because they feel they have more of a purpose i duno....see both sides for sure....preaching is the only thing I disagree with |

Jesus doesn't hate yoga, but some of his followers are being severely deluded by Satan using "sin" to distract them from the truth that yoga is God-inspired, tho not mentioned by Jesus, who did meditate a lot.
He had to have meditated, cos he sweated blood on the mount the day before he was crucified. |

holy jesus what a thread.
dharmics=god and divinity within, god and divinty all around abrahamics= god and divinity seperate and apart from man, externalized and institutionalized chad, no wonder your abrahamic friend would be threatened by a dharmic philosophy. bah, I can go on and on and on about this but really....whats the use? /last post Last edited by Revolver; Dec 05, 08 at 10:07 AM. |

I'm into The God Delusion... if you can get past the smugness there's a lot of food for thought. I think I'll go read it right now actually. |

i think because dawkins is the one with the most spotlight right now people equate a lot to him. his ideas are not new. at all. he's not a philosopher. he's no where near the bleeding edge of non-believer/agnostic discussion (and neither am i). i've watched a lot of interviews/discussions/debates with him and i've yet to hear anything new or any interesting arguments or insights. i like him, but not because of his views. i like him 'cause he's such a bulldog. as with hitchens. i regularly disagree with hitchens but i love his style (who has the audacity to write an article in vogue on how women aren't funny?). the person to look to for real substantial ideas and arguments imo is daniel dennett. he's much nicer that dawkins or hitchens. the reason i might sound like dawkins is the arguments so far have been reletively elementary. i would guess i would sound like hitchens if you were reading him or like an aggressive dennett if you were reading him. |

why else would there be so many addicts and homeless people not because they think life is awesome |

and they are related because I think durkheims "anomie" applies to this because people in our society don't have a sense of purpose or belonging. Being apart of a religious group gives them a feeling of belonging which can lead to a more hopeful and prosperous life
Again, I'm not religious but I do see why religion is beneficial to some people |
