Sometimes it is unavailable for certain people, either their building's wiring is not compatible or there is not a port available in their area. I guess that's where your distance thing came from...but saying they wouldn't "let" you makes no sense if it's simply not possible.

The technology works by "deep packet inspection". It actually looks at the header of every tcp/udp packet to determine if its peer to peer data (which is blocked or slowed to a crawl) or data that it allows full speed like http. The Ellacoya database of packet header types is vast and covers everything from bittorrent to direct connect to kazaa. So it is unaffected by changing tcp/udp ports. Those of you that have had success in changing your ports are on segments of the network that have old bandwidth throttling firewalls, that look at port numbers only.

Shaw and Rogers will undoubtely be replacing these old ones to the new Ellacoya as soon as possible and you'll be screwed too. Certainly everyone in Vancouver with shaw is screwed at the moment (if you can't get adsl from telus).

funny, i generally use my shaw account to do my work remotely, browse fnk / ndub / doa & download the odd mixset. i guess since i'm not using the internet purely for piracy, THIS WON'T AFFECT ME MUCH? tell your friend to try doing a little less piracy and then find out if her speeds are fine.

no i do get it. i really hope her and all her high-bandwidth sucking friends get shaped until they get sub-1kbps speeds and they transfer to other networks so i can continue getting high speeds and download the odd tv show that i happen to miss.

actually, you should read up on piracy in canada, especially the difference between downloading something and uploading something.

stokedfish: not legal to share music/tv/movies/etc up here, to my knowledge. it's a bit of a legal grey area to download (ie. no one has been prosecuted) but i'm pretty sure it's illegal to be the guy giving them away.
