it obviously doesn't take into account things like highways or diagonal streets, but the equation is basically right. the divide by 5 part is the only part that throws me off. that suggests that each block is 1/5 of a kilometer, or 200 meters, and i don't know if that is right or not. i got bored at work and compared the results of that equation to google maps and its approximately right. not exact, but close.

FYI: The grid goes all the way out to Chilliwack, at least for the house numbers anyways.

The only times I EVER got lost in Surrey/Delta/Langley was when I had to find somewhere that was a street NAME instead of the grid system.

That is right; that's the whole poing: Each street is 200m apart. That means every 8 streets is 1600m which is 1 mile. So, you've got a main street every mile.

That's why there's streets with A and B. 152B St is better than 152 & 2/3 St.
