wow it seems the overwhelming majority say mac. not that im surprised, but at bottom i can get a stacked pc laptop for 500 less than the cheapest mac, and its got basically all the same stats.. maybe thats cos i dont know anything, but this computer would be only for music, no internet. i have a desktop to use for internet, and i hve no interest in corrupting my shit.
that said, im really enjoying this discussion, so keep it up! |

ya bevan thats a similar set up that i run...
i have a MBP and a g4mdd that i run for video/audio/photo only....nice and clean and off the internet...the only way to go if you can. i keep a dell laptop that i run for the dirty internet and file sharing and all that crap....as well as a old 1.4 athalon tbird that still runs win 98 cause i only use that for soundforge6.0 and acid 3.0 lol... its a good system and your thinking in the right direction.... is this going to be a dj'ing\serato only laptop?...or are you going to use it as a all around mobile production? thing is, apple software and the GUI of mac os is wonderful, simple, clean and rock solid and stupid simple to use. but if its raw dollars and your just using it ONLY for music,dj'ing, occasional audio recording then youd be just fine with a pc....but im tellin ya, if you can wait another pay check, save up some scrilla, sell something you dont need you will be extremely pleased with a mac. |

All mac's use the same operating system and parts, leading to an extremely stable OS. Where, a PC laptop could use cheap parts. |

don't forget you can use Logic as your sequencer! By far the best!!!!!

There are billions of torrent clients out there, shouldn't be too difficult. Remember that torrents are an open protocol (written in python so the program has all the code in it in text form - goooo interpreted languages!) and so it's super mad easy to port to other OS's. Also there is a soulseek client for the mac as well, which is good for just finding single mp3s. I don't know what it is (I use nicotine+ which is for *nix, which would work on the mac but I hear there's a better alternative) but the mac buffs here could probably help you out. |

So I'm going to use a combo of Live 7, and Sonar 5. I hate using two programs to make beats (other then using a wave editor), but if I want to make house I really need internal sidechaining. I'm finding right now that all the major daw applications are in the running to earn my business. I will be buying some sort of desktop, and DAW application in the next six months to a year. If cakewalk can sort out it's issues, and more internal sidechaining routes I will go for it becaue pc is so much more affordible and there is alot of really good features in it. Live could win out if they make the mixer more proffesional (why are there no number on the meters?). The granual delay is so wicked in live, it's a sound that I have been looking for. The cracked versions of cubase are pretty sketchy so It would be hard to make a dission without full access to it for a few months. I am in love with the current version of Logic, but Mac is pricey.... but then again the expandibility is so awsome with the new Mac Pros, it may last a life time. PS I feel like for the past couple of weeks I've been a computer technition rather than a producer.... it sucks!!!!!!!!!! Last edited by inside; May 07, 08 at 10:01 PM. |

You can order right from apple.ca, the prices should be the same everywhere. If your a student or know someone that is a teacher you can get an education discount of roughly 10%, only from the website though.
