This city has some of the rudest panhandlers ever. They have this idea that just because they're begging you owe them something. It's nuts. One time this bum comes up to my buddy while we're buying hot dogs and asks for some change for some coffee. My friend orders another dog. Guy repeats his request for coffee change. My friend replies "I'm buying you a hot dog." Annoying Panhandler decides to vehemently demand that he just give him the money for a coffee.

My friend says: "No, I won't give you any money. But if you're hungry, you can have a hot dog."

After a couple more exchanges like this, the panhandler finally submits that he's not going to be able to pick up any rock with this beg, he asks "Can I have a smokie?"

You know that saying about beggars and choosers? Sometimes I wonder where it comes from.

Every homeless person you see is 1/4th of the amount of homeless on the streets. This city is going out of control with the amount of homeless I see here and you cant blame them for being aggressive. This city constantly seems to put the homeless on the todo pile and never seems to address the issue.

Dabbler im 100% with you that MOST ppl do not step in situation like that. MOST do keep walking, act like they didnt see anything, or stare and watch to see what happens. I have witnessed it soo many times.

Goodfellow, sorry but I dont totally think you did the right thing. You had no right to lay your hands on that man. Yes he was being verbally abusive, but your only asking for MORE trouble by making it physical. I think its great when you stood up and told him to back off, but you could in fact be charged for assult. Boys quite being so violent all the time.

if you were a guy and you saw a girl getting grabbed, and she looked so in fear that she was shocked you know? and it looked like she was the ONLY person in the restaurant.. so i did something abjout it.

I FUCKING HATE VANCOUVER.. its nothing to do wtih homeless ppl.

I dropped outta my schooling and moved back to the island. things like that.. and people doing nothing etc , is just a trait of vancouver. nobody gives a fuck about other people, and i do.

She does have a point though - you were the one who threw the first blow. Most courts will say the fight was your fault. Good rule of thumb is don't ESCALATE violence. Using violence when necessary is understandable, but does it really make sense to invade iraq when Afghanistan is the country that attacked you?

He pushes her? Push him. If he then throws a swing at you, defend yourself and throw a punch back. But if you throw the first blow, in the eyes of the law (and just about everyone observing) you started the fight.

I commend you for taking action when none others would, but keep in mind that just because you're justified to intervene doesn't necessarily mean you're justified to knock a fucker out.

haha - rhia doesnt care about anyone else, she probably does more charity/good-will work in a week then you have done in your whole life.

rhia made a valid point. this city needs to clean up their act instead of pushing the problem out into the suburbs or worse, ignoring it like they have been.

although the delivery was shit, the guy had a point. why wasnt he allowed to eat in the restaurant? he shouldnt have been discriminated against.

and she was right, there is no need to use physical violence. nev and myself stepped up to three brutes doing the exact same thing to someone else in a different restaurant just a few weeks ago. after many tries at intimidating us, they left. use your words.

Probably one of the most untruthful and unfounded comments I've ever read on this site. Like Avana said, Rhia's career and her charity work have put her head and shoulders above anyone else. She's also probably one of the most compassionate and caring people I've come across in my life.

Actually she'd probably use her head and use the necessary measures to alleviate the situation. I know that I would have tried to talk the situation through, you could have taken over the conversation by simply using some logic and words to deflect the anger on the server towards yourself, which ultimately could have relieved a lot of tension. There are also many non-violent and non-agressive ways to make someone exit a premises.

Oh give me a break, drop the holier than thou Jesus complex. You dropped out and moved back because you couldn't hack it in the city, don't blame it on the surrounding people. I've travelled through out the world and Vancouver has some of the most helpful residents I've come across.

Eventually you'll have to sit down and realize that some people aren't able to rise above certain obstacles and in turn blame their surroundings as opposed to where the blame should really lie, IN YOU.

First you said he was just threatening her, and now he grabbed her? Which one was it? I can understand you stepping in and asking him to calm down, but you had NO RIGHT to punch him. That was obviously a way for you to play the tough guy role.

I don't believe that Vancouver's homeless people are more violent/angry than any other city. A homeless man with an anger problem is no different then a dentist with an anger problem. Same problem, different stage in life.
