I think they're cool - but I don't think they were right for Vancouver.
Like, would it really have been that hard for one of them to be wearing a white and red scarf with a maple leaf on it? I'm disappointed at the lack of Canadiana... |

As grim as this sounds, the unavailing of Olympic mascots is bigger news than people dieing. That happens every day. |

maybe because the olympics are in VANCOUVER and what represents vancouver and the west coasts does not necessarily represent the rest of canada.

The best mascot is Muk Muk and he's not even a actual mascot! |

In fact, each city is very unique - Vancouver's Asian and Native communities are represented by these mascots, but what about the REST of Vancouver? What about Whistler where all of the snow events will take place? I think that they focused far too much on two groups and didn't look at the big picture of Vancouver. I think these mascots were chosen for pure marketability and prospective sales, which I completely understand, but I think it's kind of selling Vancouver out because we have so much more to offer. |

does everyone here forget exactly what a 'mascot' is?
we already did the 'canadian' thing in the 70s for montreal and amik was so not as cute as quatchi. i'm too lazy to search for images right now, but go ahead and look at ALL of the other mascots used and you will see that ours actually isn't that bad. Have you seen beijings? holy shit. fuck, quatchi is so cute i want one of my very own. |

Orcas are already the Vancouver Canucks logo, so it seems pretty obvious they wouldn't want to go with that. Spirit Bears are already part of the downtown exhibit, so they might run into legality issues if they try to re-appropriate the character for a multi-billion dollar venture such as the olympics. And it'd probably cost more to license an already-known character than to just have a new one designed for the olympics. Committees don't really tap that much into the hearts & minds of the people of the city. They're concerned about two things: 1) Is it marketable? 2) Are we gonna get sued over it? |

Let me introduce you to the concept of a "theme". |

Also, from someone who has lived here not as long as you, and can take a look at the whole picture easier than you can. Yes, these mascots are a good representation of Vancouver. |
