Jim, seriously. Just because Amercians aren't taught about Canada doesn't make them stupid. That's like saying I'm an idiot because I don't know anything about Argentina (or wherever). Don't feed the stereotyping.

Actually, sea bears ARE real. Any fur seal can be correctly identified as a sea bear. Only educated people would actually know that, thanks!

There is a stereotype that Americans don't know anything about the rest of the world nor do they care. In some cases, it's true. Some people are uneducated and some people just don't care to know because it doesn't affect them at all. This is true for people from everywhere and anywhere - what can the average Canadian kid tell you about the US other that who the President is? Probably not too much. |

I haven't really thought too deeply about them. I just think they are cute.
Also, anyone saying that the inukshuk is a meaningless pile of rocks is wrong. They are built and used as landmarks in the north where everything is blanketed in white. They also symbolize friendship. And, um hi, they represent one of our groups of aboriginal people. Duh. |

THIS IS FACT. Unless they are in an IB program or such, they're not getting taught anywhere near the level that the students are being taught here in Canada or the rest of the world for that matter. THIS IS FACT. Grade 11 students in Canada regularly score 1100 or higher on the SAT's. You're fighting an up hill battle here nat, you're picking an argument with someone who not only has family members in the education system down there; but also grew up south and north of the border. |

I'm not saying the education system in the States is fan-fucking-tabulous - my point is simply that I'm sick and tired of the "Americans are idiots because they don't know anything about Canada" attitude. The only reason that Canadians know so much about the States is because the US has such a great influence on Canada - if Canada's influence on the US was anywhere close to the influence the US has on Canada, Americans would know a heck of a lot more about our country. I am well aware of the condition of the US public school system, however, I don't think that not being taught about Canada is the problem there, I don't think you'll disagree.
Only extremely bright Canadian students who are interested in attending a US school are encouraged to take the SATs. Most Canadians don't take them, which means that the average score would naturally be higher if only the top tier of Canadian students take them. Last edited by galaxie; Dec 03, 07 at 03:58 PM. |

It isn't that American's don't know anything about Canada... It's that they can't point out most countries, or major cities on a world map.
Here, have some of them play this, and see how far they get: A work safe link, and somewhat fun game |
